EPUB

a cadet of a noble family during the reign of Queen Anne, who takes service in the campaigns of the Duke of Marlborough, and whose memoirs vividly picture the courtly and military characters and the wits of the period-Steele, Addison, Swift, as well as Marlborough: Queen Anne and the Pretender figuring in its pages.

Pugin, the architect, died last week at his residence at Ramsgate, and was buried in his church of St. Augustine; Mr. Pugin was the author of many architectural treatises, which abound with valuable artistic studies. The Queen has presented his widow with the grant of £100 a year. Two Government grants have also lately been awarded: one to Caroline Southey, a yearly pension of £200,-in consideration of her late husband's literary talents; the other to Miss Louisa Stuart Costello, of £75 per annum.

M. Humboldt is said to be vigorously employed on a 4th volume of “ Cosmos," which, it is considered, will soon be ready for the press.
