Messrs. Longman and Co. have added to the interest of their "Traveller's Library" by publishing in it the admirable Memoir which appeared in the Times of Sept. 15 and 16;-" An Old Soldier's Life of Wellington" is a promising title of a book now advertised as ready;-the "Readable Books" of this month has " Wellington, the Story of his Life;"-Messrs. Ingram, Cooke, and Co. publish a cheap Illustrated Edition, also a larger Life, in two volumes, by J. H. Stocqueler, Esq.;-but the public will not be satisfied till they are in possession of the more elaborate Memoir promised by Lord Mahon; some time must, however, of necessity elapse before any of the volumes appear.The late Count D'Orsay's smaller and last statuette of the Duke, executed in bronze, and now published by Mr. Walesby of Waterloo Place, was so much admired by the hero himself, that he purchased several copies only a short time before his death.-Vide Adv. 868. Two works of considerable interest, relative to the Mormon Settlements in America, have lately been imported into this country,-Captain Stansbury's "Expedition to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah," and Gunnison's "History of the Rise, Progress, and peculiar Doctrines of the Mormons, or Latter-Day Saints."-A most excellent elementary work on Astronomy has just been issued by Messrs. Jarrold and Son, of Norwich, under the title of a " Guide to the Knowledge of the Heavens," by R. J. Brown, Esq.-The accomplished writer, Miss Sinclair, has added to her numerous works a new Novel, under the title of "Beatrice, or the Unknown Relatives."-The author of "A Trap to catch a Sunbeam" has a new little tale, called "The Cloud with a Silver Lining.". A new serial of considerable interest to the scientific world is commenced this month-the Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science, under the joint editorship of Dr. Lankester and G. Busk, Esq. Each number will coutain four lithographic illustrations: those in the first number are extremely elaborate and beautiful. The printed list of contributors to the work are a sufficient guarantee of its talent. The increasing popularity of Mrs. Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" has induced several publishers to come forward with fresh editions, among which we may notice that of Messrs. Simms & M'Intyre, in the "Parlour Library," and of Mr. Bentley, in the "Standard Novels."-Mr. Bohn has also published three editions; his "Standard Library' one forms a very handsome volume.-A printer's error, in our last impression, assigned the authorship of Uncle Tom in England" to Mrs. Stowe:" the advertisement should have run thus-"Uniform with Uncle Tom's Cabin,' by Mrs. Beecher Stowe." Mr. Thackeray's long promised Novel is, at last, announced to appear in the course of October : the work is said to be calculated not only to satisfy public expectation, but to raise the reputation of the author, by showing that his power of revivifying the past is equal to his graphic skill in depicting contemporary life.
