Each of these volumes-some fifteen hundred in number-has been carefully indexed by an examination of each article, and reference has been made under the subject of which the article treats. The whole is arranged alphabetically, so that by turning to any subject, the periodical, the volume, and the page where it has been discussed, can be immediately ascertained.

An important feature of the work has been to give, with the reference to an article, the name of the writer. This was an undertaking attended with no little difficulty; yet the work will contain the names of the authors of many thousand articles that were contributed anonymously to the leading Reviews and Magazines, and in several series--one of which is the North American Review-the writer's name of every article will be given.

The Index will be brought down to January, 1852; and will be an indispensable book of reference to every student and literary man. Complete in 1 vol. 8vo., about 600 pages.

Orders for the above work should be sent in at once to the publisher,

A COPIOUS and CRITICAL LATIN-ENGLISH LEXICON, founded on the larger German-Latin Lexicon of Dr. WILLIAM FREUND: with Additions and Corrections from the Lexicons of Gesner, Facciolati, Scheller, Georges, &c., by E. A. ANDREWS, LL.D. &c. New Edition, in One large Volume, royal 8vo. 21s.

In reviewing this Lexicon, THE ATHENÆUM says:"In conclusion, we are glad to have an opportunity of introducing so excellent a work to the notice of our classical and philological readers. Rarely, if ever, has so large an amount of philological information been comprised in a single volume of this size. The knowledge which it conveys of the early and later Latin is not to be gathered from ordinary Latin dictionaries."

THE LITERARY GAZETTE says-" We have examined this book with considerable attention, and have no hesitation in saying it is the best Dictionary of the Latin language that has appeared."

THE SPECTATOR says-" An elaborate fullness and completeness, while every thing is quite clear, are the characteristics of this world; rendering it the best Latin Dictionary for the Scholar or advanced Student.

THE EXAMINER says-" Dr. Andr ws has a claim to our gratitude for his translation, not simply on the ground of his faithful retention of the excellencies of Dr. Freund, but also for much correction and some additions; into the 1,663 large 8vo. pages which form the volume before us all the most valuable arrangement of detail have been compressed: it remains for us only to add that we never saw such a book published at such a price."

FEW Parliamentary debates involve questions bearing more immediately upon the interests of literature, than that on Thursday last upon Mr. Milner Gibson's proposed Resolutions, and, from the subjects dwelt upon in the course of it, none more interesting to the publishing world. The debate terminated by a successive negative to the Resolutions of 195 against 107, "that the duty on paper ought to be dispensed with, as nearly as may be with reference to the security of the public revenue of 199 against 100, "that the newspaper stamp ought to be abolished ;" and of 181 against 116, "that the tax on advertisements ought to be repealed."

The various popular series continue to contribute their cheap issues, and the past fortnight has been fruitful with publications that can vie with similar productions of any part of the world,-cheap in everything but appearance. Amongst these, reference may be more particularly made to the various "Libraries" of Mr. H. G. Bohn, which, viewed only in their character as distinct works, must be admitted to be valuable; but, when regarded as a whole series, may be considered a monument of literary judgment combined with commercial enterprise. The reprint of the Slave Memoir (Vizetelly), Macfarlane's " Life of Marlborough" (Routledge), Madame Guizot's "Moral Tales" (Routledge), are all extraordinary specimens of what can be produced at a low price without detriment to appearance.

[ocr errors]

Mr. S. Laing's "Notes on Denmark" are published, affording a view of the political and social state of Denmark and the duchies of Holstein and Sleswick; and early next month will be published Austria in 1848-9," by the late Charge-d'Affaires of the United States at the Court of Vienna (Mr. W. H. Styles): this work will comprehend a history of the late political movements in Venice, Milan, and Prague, and a full account of the several campaigns in the cause of Hungarian freedom.-Lieut. Sherard Osborn's Stray Leaves from an Arctic Journal," just published, is likely from its appearance to be the favourite of the many works produced by the recent expeditions.-Sir James Stephen's forthcoming "History of France" has been secured for simultaneous publication, by the Messrs. Harpers, in the United States, where the author is very highly estimated.

[ocr errors]

The Svo. edition of the "Memoir of the Rev. H. Forsyth," some time out of print, has been republished, with a Selection from his Sermons.-The publishers of Alison's "Europe" notify that it will be necessary for subscribers to the edition in 20 vols. fcp. 8vo., to complete their sets without delay. -The late Miss Aguilar appears to have left two other posthumous works for publication, under her mother's editorship: the first, "The Days of Bruce," was published last week, and the second is announced under the title of "Home Scenes and Heart Influence," uniform with her other Tales.-Mrs. Grey has a new novel nearly ready, to be called " Mary Scham."

Messrs. Johnstone and Hunter have commenced a "Foreign Evangelical Reveiw," which will comprehend a selection of the best theological articles in the various Continental and American Reviews, chiefly the latter.-The Messrs. Grimm have recently announced their German Dictionary, and the favour with which it has been received may be gathered from the fact of its sale to the 20th of April having exceeded 7000 copies; the first part, consisting of 120 pages, contains about half of letter A, printed in royal 8vo. double columns.-The Leipsic Catalogue of publications for the half-year

[ocr errors]

ending Michaelmas last (fair of St. Michael) comprehended 3860 titles, and 1163 in preparation; that of the Easter book-fair of the last six months, publications 4527, representing the issues of 903 publishers, one contributing 113, and another 95 publications.

The Dresden Correspondent of the Literary Gazette states that Mr. Wigand, the publisher of Leipsic, is about to bring out a series of 300 Scriptural Illustrations, by Schnor, the celebrated German artist, cut in wood by Bürkner and Gaber: it will appear in numbers, under the title of "Schnor's Bible," the first to appear in the course of a few weeks.

Mr. Shoberl announces as nearly ready, Vols. 9 and 10 of "Lord Castlereagh's Letters and Despatches;" likewise the first volume of the "Lives of the Sovereigns of Russia," to be completed in three volumes, by Mr. George Fowler.

During the past week it has been ruled in our Law Courts that the multiplication of copies of Songs of which the author's copyright has not expired, even for gratuitous circulation, is such an infringement thereof as is contemplated by the Act: the judgment, therefore, was given in favour of the plaintiff, who brought his action against the Liverpool Philharmonic Society for so reprinting copies of a Part Song of Benedict's.
