Of Robert Doffie, Esq;

A Man of univerfal knowledge; we may

venture to pronounce him, one of the best chemists in Europe; if we are not mifinformed (and we hope we are not) the K-g has lately fhewn him fome mark of his R-1 favor, his merit, and his fuccefs, has opened the mouths, and employed the pens of many blockheads to talk, and write against him; but while the elabatory laid open; the hand maid to the arts, and memoirs of agriculture continued to be read; the author of thofe works must be admired; and he allowed to be an able, and a judicious man: the many enemies his abilities and fagacity raised him, among the members of the fociety for the encouragement of Arts; fufficiently juftified his correfponding anonymously with them, or as it has been faid, with himfelf; about the train oil, during the time he was chairman of that chemical Committee.

HER Lad-p having no child of her own, has taken upon herself, the education of a young Lady nearly related to her noble Lord, and perhaps, no woman in the Kingdom is better qualified to do it: we likewife believe, that fome grown people have been much oblig ed to her L-p's head, and hand too, during her refidence in foreign Courts; for the figure and station, they now bear in this.-We do not mean that contemptible wretch, the Apothecary's fon of S-k-lle Street, Mr. S-y

FROM a real, or a pretended zeal, for Religion, this Lady has done inconceivable mischief, which Bedlam; every private Madhouse, and most B-w-y Houses will testify! we cannot however help believing, fhe means well, but fhe would do more good, by using her endeavours, to difunite, what they call, Holy Band.

the

Anecdote of a certain Lady of Quality.

HER L-p being at cards, a foreign Minifter, one of her party, obferving her to fearch her pockets with a look of diftrefs,

and hurry; asked her the occafion? she replied fhe had left, or loft her Snuff-box. The Minifter, who had a very valuable box standing on the table, between him and her, very politely defired her Ladyship to use his, 'till she returned home, or had found her own. When immediately, putting it in her pocket, she took out a trifling Toy, and observed that the box was too valuable a present to accept, without making fome return; and this the Minifter, was, either too polite, or too much furprised, to refuse!
