THE WORKS OF THOMAS GRAY En Prose and Verse EDITED BY EDMUND GOSSE CLARK LECTURER ON ENGLISH LITERATURE AT THE IN FOUR VOLS.-VOL. II. LETTERS London MACMILLAN AND CO. 1884 [The Letters of Gray were first published in 1775, by Mason, who took the liberty of amending and omitting portions of the text, and of inserting interpolations of his own. A better and a much fuller text was published by Mitford in 1816. The letters addressed to the Rev. Norton Nicholls appeared in 1843, and in 1853 Mitford published an additional volume of new letters, chiefly addressed to Mason. In the following pages I have followed Mitford's latest collations, except as regards the very numerous letters addressed to Wharton, which are all printed here directly from Gray's holographs in the Egerton MSS.-Ed.] |
