DEPOSITED BY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

PREFACE

Reference is made to Part I of "Documentary Material on the Inter-American Conference on Agriculture, Forestry, and Animal Industry," edition of 1929, for copies of resolutions adopted at the Sixth International Conference of American States and by the Governing Board of the Pan American Union, reports of the permanent committee on agriculture, the preliminary program submitted by the aforesaid committee, and list of the national agricultural cooperating committees in the various countries appointed to cooperate with the Pan American Union.

Attention is invited to the article by Mr. Alberto Adriani, former chief, Division of Agricultural Cooperation, Pan American Union, on "The Inter-American Conference on Agriculture," which is reproduced from the Bulletin of the Pan American Union for February, 1930, pages 149-155, giving a statement of the origin, aims, and possible results of this conference; also to the "Report on Tropical Agriculture," by the late Dr. W. A. Orton, director of the Tropical Plant Research Foundation, Washington, D. C.

Since the publication of the foregoing, the tentative program has been amplified and at the request of the National Agricultural Cooperating Committee of the United States, a series of papers has been prepared by distinguished specialists, mainly in the employ of the United States Department of Agriculture. These papers are reproduced in order to avoid the necessity of reading them in the conference, that each delegate may have a copy before him, and that they may serve as the bases for the round-table discussions of the conference and be available for future use and reference. To the authors of papers so submitted the cooperating committee wishes to express its highest appreciation of their helpful cooperation.

It is hoped that this volume may be followed by a third, "Part III" of "Documentary Material," as a permanent record of the proceedings and resolutions of the conference.
