He asks the Hebrews, If perfection were Heb. vii. by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it "I, 18. the people received the law) what further need was there that another Priest mould rise (as David foretold there should) after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron ? A little after, he says, There is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before (the Levitical Law) for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect; but the bringing in of a better, hope did.

Again, to evince the Truth of what he affirms, he produces the Prophecy of ib. viii. 8. Jeremiah; Bebold the days come, faith the Jer. xxxi. LORD, when I will make a new covenant 31, &c. with the house of Israel, and with the houfe of Judah: not according to the covenant

that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. For this is the covenant that I will make, &c. Then adds the Apostle; In that he faith, a new covenant, He hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old, is ready to vanish away.

Again, after enumerating the Implements of the Tabernacle, and the Custom of the High-Priest going once a Year, in

The New COVENANT. Seeing now that the Ceremonial Law is actually abolish'd by the coming of CHRIST, let us proceed yet a little further to inquire, what it was that he instituted, or set up in the stead chereof. And that, as I obferv'd before, was Universal Charity. For, to omit the several Instances wherein this was foretold of Ifa. ii. 4. him by the Prophets, he declares in his Sermon

upon the Mount, Wbat foever &c. to the ye would that men should do unto you, Mat

. vii. do ye even go to them; For this is the 12. law and the prophets. He says to his Dilciples, A new commandment I give unto you, Joh. xlii. That ye love one another. By this sisall all 34. men know that ye are my disciples, if ye

Joh. xv. have love one to another. And again ; This

is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved

you. The Apostles, accordingly, give us to understand, that this was the * Sum total of what they had in Charge to teach

Mankind. St. Paul writing to the RoRcm. mans, says, Owe no man any thing, but to xüli, 8.

love one another; for be, that loveth another, hath fulfilled the law. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour; therefore love is the

fulfilling of the law. He assures the GalaCel.v.6. tians, that In Christ Jesus, 'neither

circumcifon availeth any thing, nor uncircumcifion, but faith which worketh by love. . For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in This, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self.
