MARIAGE D'INCLINATION. Par Fortuné du Boisgobey. On the evening of the disastrous fire at the Opéra Comique in Paris, Edouard Fourtelle, a young diplomatist, makes the acquaintance of Simone Noizet, whose uncle has pointed out to him the advantages which would accrue from a marriage with that young lady. In trying to escape from the burning building later on, the party is separated, and Simone is given up for lost when she at last arrives on the arm of a stranger who, she explains, has saved her at the peril of his life. When Fourtelle reaches his home, he finds his valet gone, and discovers that during his absence his apartments have been broken into and sacked. Not the slightest clue can be obtained of the whereabouts of the thieves, though the best detectives are employed by Fourtelle.-Brentanos, 1.25.

DISPARU. Par Albert Delpit.-Albert-Etienne Darcourt, a young and penniless French navy officer, is engaged to be married to Alice Aubrey, a charming young orphan who is living with her kind, old English governess. Shortly before the wedding, Darcourt goes to Holland to visit his only relative, a disagreeable, rich uncle, who is utterly dissatisfied with the match, and sends his young kinsman away in disgrace. Shortly after the marriage has taken place, Darcourt is promoted to a command in Tonquin, and leaves at once for his destination. The news that his uncle has died leaving an invalid testament reaches him however in time to make provisions for his young wife before he starts. Darcourt is wounded in a skirmish with Annamites and lost sight of in the confusion of a disorderly retreat which follows. His body is not found on the battlefield.-Brentanos, 1.25.

EN ALLEMAGNE. SENSATIONS D'UN PASSANT. Par Camille Lemonnier.-A series of studies of parts of Germany visited by the author and his wife. The great diversity of the subjects which Mr. Lemonnier found worthy of his attention and of his pen, makes very pleasant reading. The book contains chapters about Cologn, the Rhine and Mühlhausen, the Cathedral, Jean Marie Farina, old streets, Mainz, beer-drinking English travellers, Wurtzburg, Nuremberg with its old buildings and mediæval air of poetry and rest, its industry of children's playthings, Munuch, its beer-houses and art-treasures, which latter give occasion for an interesting discussion of the masters of the Dutch and German, Italian and Spanish schools, Regensburg, the Donau, and a short but incisive talk about the Walhalla. The writer promises to discuss in a future volume the parts of Germany not treated of in the present work.-Brentano's, 1.25.
