MARGERY. A Tale of Old Nuremberg. By George Ebers.-The story of Margery Schoppen told by herself in her diary, which was discovered by the author in an antiquary's shop. She was born in 1404, and as she lived to a goodly old age, her narrative teems with interesting information about the troubled days of the Emperor Charles and his wars. The story is interesting, but owes its chief value to the correct pictures given of the period.-Gottesberger & Co., 2 vols., .80.

NEW MATERIALS FOR THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Translated from Documents in the French Archives, and edited by John Durand.-The material collected in this volume throws new light on many phases of the history of the American Revolution and calls attention to occurrences which have thus far escaped the historian's observation or thoughtlessly been passed over by him with a casual mention. The invaluable services of France to the nation struggling for independence are clearly brought out in this work which is actually a separate history of the Revolution, and contains descriptions of men and events from an entirely new point of view.-Holt &Co., N. Y., 1.75.

PARIS BY DAY AND NIGHT. A Book for the Exhibition. By Anglo-Parisian.-An exceedingly clever book on Paris and the Parisians, which gives in airy causeries more and better digestible information than can be found in guide-books. Paris in General, Politics in Paris, Queer People in Paris, French Lawyers and Financiers, Detectives, Criminals, the Guillotine and the Morgue are the headings of the Chapters in which a larger tout Paris passes the review. Of great interest is the chapter entitled: "Find the Female;" a Synopsis of French History, in which a bird's-eye view is given of the awful influence of woman on France's history.— Brentano's, 1.40.

THE PHANTOM FUTURE. By Henry Seton Merriman. While studying medicine in London, Tom Valiant draws a collection of illustrations to Longfellow's poems which prove uncommonly successful. Tom is rather a wild young fellow, and spends too much of his time in Myra's bar, over which Syra, a handsome, respectable young woman, presides. She sees with concern Tom's increasing appetite for drink, and talks about it to Samuel Crozier, a public singer, who, she feels instinctively, is the only man that can influence Tom. Crozier talks to him, and advises him to give up medicine and take up art as a profession.-Harper's, .35.

PICTURESQUE ALASKA. By Abby Johnson Woodman.-A journal of a tour among the mountains, seas and islands of the Northwest, from San Francisco to Sitka, giving descriptions of Mount Shasta and the Pass of Siskijou, Mount Hood, Mount Tacoma, and Puget Sound, Victoria and Nanaimo, B. C., to Fort Tongas, Alaska. From Dixon's Entrance to Juneau, Sitka, Juneau, and Douglas Island. The illustrations are taken from photographs, and represent: Totem Poles, Indian graves at Fort Wrangell, Juneau, Floating Ice, Takou Inlet, the Muir Glacier and Sitka.-Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1.00.

SOCIALISM IN ENGLAND. By Sidney Webb, LL. B.-Treats subsequently of: The Development of the English Socialist Ideal, The Rise of the English Socialist Movement, The English Socialist Associations, Socialism in the Churches, Socialism at the Universities, Socialism in Political Economy, Parliamentary and Municipal Socialism, and Socialism in Politics. The study is a very timely one, as the daily increasing influence of socialism in English public life may very easily be overlooked by the casual observer, especially as it is still often ignored or misapprehended by public men themselves." A clear exposition of what socialism really is enhances the value of the treatise.-Am. Econ. Ass'n. Balto., .75.

A SPLENDID EGOTIST. By Jeannette H. Walworth.-During the absence of her husband, a young, promising sculptor, Mrs. Marianne Mackaye, who keeps herself lovingly in the background and slaves and economizes that her adored artist may go out in the world and make advantageous connections, receives the visit of a young girl who mistakes her for a servant and talks too freely about the handsome artist. On the night of Mackaye's return, Marianne engages him in conversation, and urges him to work more. Mackaye retorts angrily and at last tells her that he is hampered-hampered by her, his wife.-Belford, Clarke & Co., .50.

THE STORY OF PATSY. By Kate Douglas Wiggin. The teacher in a San Francisco free kindergarten tells the story of Patsy, the little waif who has been thrown down-stairs by a drunken father and been nursed by his mother, who died when her little one had recovered. Patsy wishes to enter the kindergarten and calls on the teacher to tell her so. His short life in which he thinks he receives a foretaste of paradise and sees an angel in his kind teacher is told with quiet pathos and delicate feeling.— Houghton, Mifflin & Co., .60.

STUDIES IN THE OUTLYING FIELDS OF PSYCHIC SCIENCE. By Hudson Tuttle.-"There is a Psychic Ether, related to thought, as the luminiferous ether is to light," is the opening sentence of the analysis, which serves as introduction to this book, which treats of Matter, Life, Spirit, what the senses teach, the sensitive state, sensitiveness proved by psychometry, sensitiveness during sleep, dreams, sensitiveness of disease, thought tranference, intimations of an intelligent force, effects of physical influences on the sensitive, unconscious sensitiveness, prayer in the light of sensitiveness and thought waves, Christian Science, etc.-M. L. Holbrook & Co., N. Y.

WANDERINGS OF A WAR ARTIST. By Irving Montagu.-The "special artist" of the Illustrated London News, shows in this volume that he is equally as clever with the pen as with the pencil. His reminiscences cover the FrancoPrussian War, the Carlist War, and the Servian War, and abound in perilous situations and narrow escapes told in an unassuming, highly interesting way. The element of danger which form so large large a part of Mr. Montagu's life is well rendered in his narrative, which possesses to a high degree the fascination peculiar to the best works of travel and adventure. Fully illustrated.-Brentano's, 4.20.

THE WING OF AZRAEL. By Mona Caird.— Viola Sedley, the only daughter of a poor country gentleman with a fatal ability for getting into debt, is forced by her father and patient, subdued, Puritan mother, to whom suffering and misery seem our alloted share on earth, into a marriage with Philip Dendraith, that she may save them from ruin. Dendraith is well aware of the aversion and hatred his wife feels for him, but his diabolical nature finds in these sentiments and in the degrading sense of physical and mental slavedom which he keeps constantly awake in her, a weapon wherewith to torture her.-F. F. Lovell & Co., .30.

A WOMAN OF SOREK. By Anthony Gould.— Of independent fortune and imbued with the strong religious convictions of his father, Jonas Chidsy resolves to study for the ministry, and enters a theological college in a little New England town, which contains also a university. Here he makes the acquaintance of Marcia Clinton, a heartless, self-indulging, but prudent coquette, who is in love with George Dorne, the idol of the 'Varsity boys. She resolves to gain conceited, priggish Mr. Chidsy's love, and to amuse herself with him for awhile. Her conduct culminates in an appalling tragedy.-Am. News Co., N. Y., .50.
