BEING SOME OF THE CHISEL-MARKS OF OUR INDUSTRIAL
AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS.
AND OTHER PAPERS.

“CURIOSITIES OF CIVILIZATION,” “OUR SOCIAL BEES.” ETC.
TO MY READERS.
THE majority of the papers in this volume have
already appeared in the pages of Once a Week and the London Review. I am half afraid that the public have had enough of them already, and I have only been tempted to republish them by the representations of my Publisher. The fact that “Our Social Bees”—a work somewhat similar in scope to the present volume—has already reached a sixth edition, indicates, he tells me, that I have not yet exhausted the public patience. Trusting this may prove to be the case, I have ventured to trespass once more upon the good-nature of my readers. Professional work will not permit me, however, to do so again; and the next time I take up my pen, it must be in furtherance of the main business of my life—the study of Mental Disease.
