Naval stores accounted for 14,936 of which European ports received 8,460 tons; Mediterranean ports 6,222 tons; and Malaya and Japan 69 and 185 tons respectively. Of the 9,945 tons of vegetable food products European ports received 5,773 tons of animal feeds and 179 tons of other while Mediterranean ports received 3,993 tons of nuts and preparations. pean ports also received 369 tons of vegetable products inedible and Mediterranean ports 137 tons of nonmetallic minerals. Euro Domestic trade.-- Domestic oceanborne traffic at the port of Panama City during 1956 amounted to 424,976 tons of 2,000 pounds. The coastwise movement accounted for 92 percent of the total while the intercoastal and noncontiguous movements accounted for 7 percent and one percent respectively. In the coastwise trade receipts totaled 308,073 tons which, with the exception of 11 tons of nonmetallic minerals, nec., and 103 tons of miscellaneous cargo, consisted entirely of petroleum products. Gulf coast ports accounted for 299,897 tons while the remainder of 8,176 tons of petroleum products originated at Atlantic coast ports. Shipments of 80,769 tons consisted of paper and paper products, the total of which was destined to Atlantic coast ports. Shipments of 32,068 tons accounted for the intercoastal movement. Paper and paper products were the principal commodities totaling 30,276 tons. Other commodities included canned goods of 1,190 tons; naval stores, 540 tons; and in lesser amounts vegetable oils, cotton manufactures, synthetic fibers and miscellaneous. The noncontiguous trade consisted entirely of shipments of wood and paper in the amount of 4,066 tons. In 1956, the combined total of internal and local waterborne traffic at Panama City amounted to 776,681 short tons, most of which was internal receipts of petroleum and petroleum products.
