INDEX DIGEST

[Numbers in parentheses following citations indicate pages on which subjects are considered]

ABANDONMENT.

Routes: See ROUTES (ABANDONMENT).

ACCESSORIAL SERVICES.

Following 4 M. C. C. 523, evidence of personal services, incidental to, but not
strictly a part of, a transportation service, was properly considered in determining
whether public convenience and necessity required the transportation to which
they were an adjunct. Tynes Contract Carrier Application, 699.
ACQUISITION OF CONTROL. See CONSOLIDATION AND CONTROL.
ADEQUACY OF SERVICE. See SERVICE (ADEQUATE TRANSPORTATION).
ADJACENT FOREIGN COUNTRY. See FOREIGN COMMERCE.

ADMINISTRATIVE RULINGS. See also RULES OF PRACTICE.

Bureau of Motor Carriers: Rulings construed or cited:

Ruling No. 4: Consolidated Freight Lines, Inc., Contract Carrier Application,
305 (307).

Ruling No. 35: Caravans, Inc., Contract Carrier Application, 659 (660).
ADVANTAGES. See also COMPETITION.

Contract Carriers vs. Common: In the following cases, contract carriage of
various commodities was found to be better adapted to the needs of shippers than
was common-carrier service: Pomprowitz Extension-Indiana-Michigan, 301
(303); Rickerd Contract Carrier Application, 145 (148); Ryan Contract Carrier
Application, 537 (540).

Equipment, Types: See EQUIPMENT and various types of equipment.

Motor vs. Rail: Truck transportation of fuel oil to State hospital at St. Joseph,
Mo., was more advantageous than rail, since the hospital was located on a high
elevation and it would be expensive and impractical to build a railroad spur track
directly to it. Moreover, at certain times of the year shipments by rail would
require heating before unloading, whereas truck shipments could be loaded hot at
the refinery. Wyatt Contract Carrier Application, 178 (179).

The nature of household-goods moving business renders such rail facilities as
may be available inadequate to meet the requirements of shippers, and makes
necessary the proposed motor transportation. Harrell Common Carrier Appli-
cation, 413 (414).
