Congress provided additional funds during the past several years to accelerate our cooperation with the States against this disease. Scabies is caused by a skin parasite. If left untreated, it results in loss of weight and thriftiness of the animal. In the range area, particularly, or where the animals are not subjected to unusually good husbandry, it brings about emaciation and death. We have a comparison of photographs here of a normal sheep and a scabby sheep, as an infected sheep is called. I hasten to point out this is not a before-and-after photograph, as can be seen by looking at the breeds of the two animals. Note the comparison of wool clip, 81⁄2 pounds from a normal sheep, as against 2 pounds from an infected sheep. This is the usual result of this disease where it is allowed to go unchecked. Three years ago, we began a program of intensified quarantine and inspection and dipping of sheep in the infected areas-principally the Midwest and Middle Atlantic States-with the idea of rolling back the frontiers of this disease. In the West, the South, and Northeast, they had been free for some time. But, they were subject to continuing reinfestation from the other areas.
