The other facilities are used in connection with bulk and package freight traffic and cotton warehousing.

Southern Railway.-This company has 6 piers and wharves and 2 car-float bridges at Portsmouth. The six facilities have a total berthing space of 7,103 feet, with depths of water ranging from 30 to 12 feet. The foreign freight pier, with its 208,750 square feet of transit sheddage, is located at the foot of Carolina Avenue at Pinners Point. Two coastwise piers, with 3,234 feet of berthing space, 22 to 20 feet of water, and 331,640 square feet of transit sheds, are also located at Pinners Point. Heavy freight is handled at a bulkhead wharf near Pier No. 2; one wharf near the foot of Bart Street is operated by H. B. Rogers, Inc., for handling freight by barges to and from other piers in Norfolk Harbor, and one is used by the Virginia Smelting Co. for the receipt of sulphur ore.

UNITED STATES TERMINALS

The United States owns 11 piers and wharves with a total of 8,427 linear feet of berthing space. Four of these are for navy-yard purposes, with 6,085 feet of berthing space and 35 to 30 feet of water alongside; 2 are operated by the United States Lighthouse Service, having 1,212 feet of berthing space and depths ranging from 18 to 12 feet; 2 small piers are used in hospital service; and 3 at Craney Island are leased to the Virginia Tank Storage Co. and used in connection with tank storage of all forms of liquids.

PRIVATE TERMINALS

The 20 privately owned piers and wharves, with 6,112 linear feet of berthing space and 45,024 square feet of transit-shed areas, are variously owned and operated. They include a ferry slip owned by the City of Portsmouth and County of Norfolk; one, owned and operated by the Southgate Terminal Corporation on Paradise Creek in connection with its warehousing business. Other concerns owning and operating wharf facilities include 3 fertilizer plants, 2 creosoting plants, 2 oil-handling plants, 3 used in connection with shipbuilding and marine repair work, the grain-handling pier of the Allied Mills, Inc., and 3 in the fish and other marine products packing business. Newport News, Va.-There are 41 piers, wharves, and docks at Newport News, Va., with a total berthing space of 30,850 linear feet and transit shed areas aggregating 529,783 square feet.

RAILROAD TERMINALS

The 13 railroad piers and wharves at Newport News are owned and operated by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Co. These have a combined berthing space of 14,873 linear feet and 517,838 square

feet of transit shed areas. Car-ferry service is maintained to the company's Norfolk terminal and to the Sewall Point transfer bridge of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad, affording freight interchange with railroads centering at Norfolk and with plants located on the Belt Line. Direct interchange of foreign and coastwise freight between shipside and rail is provided for. Five of the piers are engaged in overseas, intercoastal, and coastwise freight business, while another handles both grain and freight; 2 are designed to handle both cargo and bunker coal; and 2 are used for handling freight and baggage between the railroad terminal at Newport News and the station in Norfolk and pier at Portsmouth.

PRIVATE AND MUNICIPAL TERMINALS

The city of Newport News owns 15 piers and wharves with a combined berthing space of 3,475 feet and 1 transit shed having 3,800 square feet of space. The latter facility is in the small boat harbor, where there is a depth of 7 feet of water, and the berthing space extends for 200 feet. Other city-owned facilities are in the same vicinity and are largely leased to oil-handling concerns.

The Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. owns and operates eight piers, located at the north end of the city, in connection with its shipbuilding and repair activities. Depths at these piers range from 35 to 26 feet, the predominating depth being about 32 feet, over a total berthing space of 11,338 linear feet.

The Southern Shipyard Corporation, near the entrance to the small boat harbor, has a pier 500 feet long and 40 feet wide at which vessels are berthed while being repaired or awaiting repairs on the marine railway. This concern also owns 1,500 feet of frontage within the small boat harbor.

The Buxton Line, operating a line to Richmond and other points on the James River, occupies a pier owned by the Old Dominion Land Co. at the foot of Twenty-fifth Street.

Hampton, Va.-There are 19 wharf facilities on Hampton Creek and its branches, one of which is at the Soldiers' Home and used for the receipt of coal for that institution; one, owned and operated by the Hampton Institute, is also used for coal handling. One, owned by the State of Virginia, affording a dockage space of 270 linear feet with 10 feet of water and a transit shed 3,000 square feet in area, is used by the Hampton Roads Belt Line as a terminal for its freight service to Norfolk and Newport News. Sand and gravel is received at 2 wharves, with a frontage of 510 linear feet and depths of from 8 to 9 feet; 3 are used in connection with the handling of oil and lubricants for vessel use; 7 are used in the fish-, oyster-, and crab-packing industries; 1, for the receipt of coal for the Virginia Public Service power and light plant; and 3 for miscellaneous purposes.

Old Point Comfort. The principal pier at this locality is owned by the United States and is used as a landing for passengers and freight for the Government reservation. This pier provides 540 linear feet of berthing space on its seven sides, a transit shed of 4,282 square feet, and has a depth of 25 feet alongside.

The Chesapeake Ferry Co. owns and operates a ferry slip in its passenger and vehicular service to Norfolk, and the United States Engineer Department has recently constructed a pier at this locality for the handling of materials used in the construction of a protecting sea wall.
