The Colonna's Shipyard, Inc., located on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk, owns and operates a Menhaden type vessel, 12-knotspeed, and 800 horsepower for assistance in towing or pulling vessels off beaches. The Norfolk Lighterage Co., foot of Commerce Street, Norfolk, owns and operates a schooner model hull floating derrick, with a lifting capacity of 35 tons, and which is equipped with two 6-inch, two 8-inch, and two 10-inch steam-operated centrifugal pumps. In addition this concern owns and operates 13 towboats and lighters. The Wood Towing Co., Roanoke Dock, Norfolk, has 13 towboats ranging from 400 to 1,200 horsepower, which are equipped with steam pumps or steam syphons, or both, monitors and hose, which are available for salvage work and fire fighting. |
