Nos. 1 and 2 have an elevated bridge deck house amidship, and steam for steering, heating, lighting, pumping, etc. No. 3 has side platforms to facilitate loading and unloading and can be used to advantage alongside vessels.

WRECKING AND SALVAGE

Services and equipment for all kinds of salvage and wrecking work are available at Hampton Roads ports.

The Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation, with offices in the Ledger Dispatch Building, Norfolk, owns and operates a floating derrick with a lifting capacity of 60 tons alongside, and 35 tons at 35 feet overside. This derrick is available for salvage work and heavy hoisting in the Hampton Roads area. It is equipped with steam and gasoline-operated pumps, diving gear, cables, anchors, and heavy purchases. Additional plant can be provided at short notice.

The Colonna's Shipyard, Inc., located on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk, owns and operates a Menhaden type vessel, 12-knotspeed, and 800 horsepower for assistance in towing or pulling vessels off beaches. Wrecking and other salvage work is also done.

The Moon Shipyard & Repair Corporation, located at the foot of Brown Avenue, Norfolk, salvages vessels on the beaches in Hampton Roads and on Chesapeake Bay. It is equipped with diving apparatus and other plant.

The Norfolk Lighterage Co., foot of Commerce Street, Norfolk, owns and operates a schooner model hull floating derrick, with a lifting capacity of 35 tons, and which is equipped with two 6-inch, two 8-inch, and two 10-inch steam-operated centrifugal pumps. In addition this concern owns and operates 13 towboats and lighters.

The Wood Towing Co., Roanoke Dock, Norfolk, has 13 towboats ranging from 400 to 1,200 horsepower, which are equipped with steam pumps or steam syphons, or both, monitors and hose, which are available for salvage work and fire fighting.
