SN DOOR was walking on Granby St., in front of No. 117, while on authorized liberty. At 2015 two civilians, subsequently identified as John Doe, SS No. 987 65 4321, no fixed address, and Richard Roe, SS No. 123 45 6789, no fixed address, emerged from the Safeway Supermarket at 123 Granby St., carrying .38 calibre revolvers and a paper shopping bag containing $4,387.00 in U.S. currency which they had obtained by robbing the manager of the supermarket, Mr. Garden Hoe. Two Norfolk police in a patrol car came to the scene. They stopped the patrol car in front of 113 Granby St. At about the same time the policemen and the two robbers began firing their revolvers, SN DOOR was observed to fall to the sidewalk on his face, his head pointing toward the doorway at 117, his feet toward the curb. An aggregate of 12 shots were fired. captured and no one was wounded by gunfire other than DOOR. DOOR was found to have a through and through wound to the head, right to left. He was taken to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, arriving at 2045 and expired at 2230 without ever having regained The bullet which inflicted the fatal wound was not recovered and identified, and it cannot be positively stated whether it was fired from one of the police revolvers or from a revolver held by one of the robbers.
