which fell on the earth; and the third part of trees was burnt up, and likewise all green grass (high and low ranks, Exod. ix. 23. between 337 and 379.)

8. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain (a mighty monarchy) burning with fire, (of wars, Jer. li. 25.) was cast into the sea (of nations;) and the third part of the sea became blood, (between A. D. 379, and 412.) 9. And the third part of the living creatures in the sea died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

10. Then the third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, (an apostate prince, as Julian, or impostor, persecutor, and conqueror,) burning like a lamp, it fell on the third part of the rivers, and fountains of waters, (and corrupted the gospel ordinances, and the retreats or abodes on the rivers' banks it hurt): 11. And the star's name is called Wormwood; and many died by the waters being bitter, (by superstition and oppression, between A. D. 413 and 493.)

12. Then the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun, of the moon, and of the stars, was smitten; so that the third part of their light was darkened, and the day shone not so bright as usual by a third part, and the night likewise, (by reason of error, and delusion, and wars, weakening supreme powers, between A. D. 493 and 568 )

13. Then I beheld an angel flying through the midst of heaven, and heard him saying aloud, Wo, wo, wo, to the earth's inhabitants, because of the other blasts of the trumpets of the three angels who are yet to sound.

CHAP. IX.

A STAR FALLETH FROM HEAVEN.

THEN the fifth angel sounded; and I saw a star fall from heaven to the earth, (an apostate impostor); to whom was given the key of the deep pit,

(the power of delusion, to destroy). 2. And he opened it, and there arose a smoke (of error) out of it, like that of a great furnace; and the sun and the air (the light and purity of the gospel) were darkened, by the smoke of the pit. 3. And there came out of the smoke locusts (Saracen Mahometans) upon the earth; to which was permitted power, as the scorpions of the earth have power, (both to bite and sting); 4. They were commanded not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men who have not the seal of God in their foreheads, (nominal Christians, and formal professors, Tit. i. 16.) 5. But power was not given to kill them, (or destroy the empire; as to the Turks) but to torment them, five prophetic months, (one hundred and fifty years, from A. D. 668, to 818.) and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man, (with the tail's dart, or sting). 6. And in those days men shall seek death, but shall not find it; and desire to die (life being bitter) but death shall flee from them. 7. And the shapes of the locusts were like (Arabian) horses prepared for battle, and on their heads were (turbans) crowns like gold, and their faces were like those of savage men. 8. And they had hair like that of women, (finely trimmed); and their teeth were like those of lions, (being cruel monsters). 9. And they had breastplates, as it were of iron; and the noise of their wings (or speedy conquests) was like that of chariots and many horses rushing to war. 10. And they had tails like scorpions, wherein were poisonous stings (a train of poisonous errors); and their power was to hurt men five months, (the season of locusts.) 11. And they had a king over them, (Satan,) who is the chief evil angel of the deep pit, named in the Hebrew Abaddon, and in the Greek Apollyon, a destroyer. 12. One woe is past; and, behold, two more woes come hereafter.

13. And the sixth angel sounded, then I heard a voice from the four horns of the altar, before God, (out of the oracle behind it,) 14. Saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, Loose the four angels (messengers, or leaders in the Turkish wars) who are bound by the great river Euphra

tes.

15, So the four angels were loosed, (or let go) who were prepared for a (prophetic) hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, to slay the third part of men, (the Greek or eastern empire, from 1063 to 1453.)

16. And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand; for I heard their number. 17. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates (bright as) of fire, and jacinct and brimstone, (sulphureous blue pale flames), and the horses heads were as those of lions, (for fierceness;) and out of their mouths issued (as it were) fire, and smoke, and brimstone, (for they used fire arms.)

18. By these three (scourges) was the third part of men killed even by the fire, and the smoke, and the brimstone, which issued as it were out of their mouths. 19. For their powers are in their mouth, and in their tails, (or train of errors:) for their tails were like serpents, having heads, and with them they do hurt.

20. But the rest of the (idolatrous) men, (the Latin church) who were not killed by these plagues, yet repented not of their handy-works, not to worship demons, (departed spirits,) and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and wood; which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21. Neither repented they of their (persecuting) murders, nor of their secret poisoning arts, nor of their whoredom, nor of their thefts.

CHAP. X.

JOHN COMMANDED TO EAT THE BOOK.

I SAW also another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud;, and a rainbow was about his head, with his face bright as the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire; 2. And he had in his hand a little book (of decrees) open; and he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the earth, (shewing power over both), 3. And cried aloud, as a lion roars, and having cried, the seven thunders uttered their voices (of seven wars). 4. And having so done, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

5. Then the angel, which I saw standing on the sea and on the earth, lifted up his right hand to heaven, 6. And sware by him that liveth for ever, who created heaven, and the things therein, and the earth, and the things therein, and the sea, and the things therein, that time of patience (towards Rome), should be no longer: 7. But in the days of the seventh angel's blast, when he would sound, the mystery of God's providence (in sparing Rome), should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

8. The voice which I heard from heaven spake to me again also, saying, Go, and take the little book which is open in the angel's hand, who stands both on the sea and the earth. 9. So I went to the angel, and said to him, Give me the little book. Then he said to me, Take it, and eat it up, (by meditating upon it); and it shall make thy bowels bitter, (by its bad tidings), but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey, (by its curious knowledge, Ezek. iii. 3) 10. So I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: but as soon as I had eaten

it, my belly was bitter. 11. Then he said to me, Thou must prophesy again concerning many peoples, and nations, and languages, and kings, what the book says.

CHAP. XI.

THE TWO WITNESSES PROPHESY.

Now there was given me a reed, like a measuring rod: and the angel stood by me, saying, Rise, and measure the temple (or church) of God, and the altar, and the space filled by them that worship therein, (in the inner court.) 2. But the outer court of the temple leave and measure it not; for it is given unto the (idolatrous Christians, hence called) Gentiles; and the holy city (the church) shall they tread under foot (by profaning it with pagan idolatries) forty and two (prophetic) months (or 1260 years.) 3. And I will give commission to my two (or very few) witnesses (for civil and religious liberty), that they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and sixty prophetic days, (or 1260 years, xii. 14.) clothed in sackcloth, (mourning the loss of civil and religious liberty.) 4. These are the two olive trees, and the two lamps standing before the Lord of the earth. (Zech. iv.) 5. And if any one injure them, fire (or prayers) proceeds out of their mouth, and devours their enemies; and if any one will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. 6. These have authority (by their prayers) to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy; they have authority over waters to turn them to blood, (Exod. vii. 20.) and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

7. And when they have finished their testimony, the savage beast (antichrist) that ascendeth out of the abyss, shall make persecuting war against them, and overcome them, and kill them, (almost wholly.) 8. And their almost dead bodies (those of civil and sa
