that the Lord having saved the people from Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6. Yea, the angels who kept not their first state, but left their proper habitation, he reserved in everlasting chains, under darkness, to the judgment of the great day. 7. As Sodom and Gomorrah with the cities about them, in like manner (with them), giving themselves over to whoredom, and following unnatural passions, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 9. But Michael the archangel when contending with the devil, in disputing about the dead body of Moses, (to shew where it was buried), did not presume to bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

10. But these speak evil of things they know not; but what they know naturally as brute beasts, in these they corrupt themselves.

11. Wo to them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the contradiction of Korah.

12. These are blemishes in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear; they are as clouds without water, carried about of winds; trees whose early buddings wither, without fruit, twice dead, (to be) plucked up by the roots; 13. Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. 14. Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his holy ones, 15. To execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have

impiously committed; and of all their hard speech. es which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

16. These are discontent, murmurers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaks extravagant things; respecting men's persons for gain.

17. But, beloved, remember the words formerly spoken by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18. How they told you there would be scoffers in the last time, walking after their own ungodly lusts. 19. These separate themselves, being sensual, not having the Spirit.

20. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. 22. But on some have compassion, making a difference: 23. And others save with fear, (as it were) pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by (the lusts of) the flesh, (as a plague.)

24. Now, to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you spotless before his glo rious presence with exceeding joy, 25. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and authority, both now and ever.

S. JOHN THE PROPHET'S
REVELATION,

CHAP. I.

JOHN'S SALUTATION TO THE CHURCHES.

THE Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him, to shew his servants things which must short

ly begin to come to pass; which he sent and sig. nified by his angel to his servant John: 2. Who testified of the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus Christ, with whatever things he saw.

3. Blessed is he that reads, and they that hearken to the words of this prophecy, and keep the things written therein, for the time is near.

4. JOHN, to the seven churches in Asia: Grace and peace be with you, from him who is, and was, and is to come, (the Eternal); and from the Holy Spirit, before his throne, with his sevenfold influences, or manifold operations, 5. And from Jesus Christ the faithful Witness, and the author of the resurrection from the dead, the Prince of the kings of the earth. To him that loved us, and washed us from our sins with his own blood, 6. And made us kings and priests to his God and Father: to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

7. Behold, he cometh in the clouds (to judg ment); and every eye shall see him, and they who (crucified and) pierced him; and all tribes of the earth (that rejected him) shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

8. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord (Jehovah), who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty, xvi. 5.

9. Í John, your brother, and companion in the tribulation, and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the (desert) isle called Patmos, for (the sake of) the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

10. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11. Saying, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last; What thou seest write in a book, and send it to the seven churches in Asia; to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to

Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

12. Then I turned to see the (author of the) voice that spake with me. And, being turned, I saw seven golden lamps; 13. And in the midst of them, one like the Son of man, clothed (as a priest) in a long robe down to the feet, and girt about the breast with a golden girdle. 14. His head and his hair were white as wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15. And his feet like fine brass when purified in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. 16. And he had in his right hand seven stars, and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword; (Heb. iv. 12.) and his countenance was as the sun shining in his strength.

17. And seeing him I fell at his feet as dead. Then he laid his right hand upon me, saying to me, Fear not; I am the first and the last; 18. I am he that lives, and was dead; now, behold, verily, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys, or power of death, and of the invisible world.

19. Write the things thou hast seen, and those which are, and those which shall be hereafter; 20. The mystery of the seven stars thou sawest in my right hand, and of the seven golden lamps, (is this). The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches; and the seven. lamp-stands, are the seven churches.

CHAP. IL

WHAT IS WRITTEN TO THE CHURCHES.

To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, These things saith he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lamps. 2. I know thy works, and thy labour, with thy patience, and how thou canst not

bear the evil ones; yea, thou hast tried them who say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars; 3. Thou hast born trouble with patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured and not fainted.

4. Yet I have somewhat against thee, as thou hast lost thy first love. 5. Remember, therefore, whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to thee quickly, and remove thy lamp out of its place, except thou repent. 6. Yet this good thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans (and Balaamites, verse 14.) whom I also hate.

7. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches; To him that overcometh, I will give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God, (Rev. xxii. 2.)

8. And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, who was dead and is alive; 9. I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, but thou art rich (in faith); I know also their blasphemy who say they are Jews, (God's peculiar people), and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10. Fear none of the things thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil (by his agents), shall cast some of you into prison, to be tried: and ye shall have tribulation ten days (or years), be thou faithful to death, and I will give thee a crown of

life.

11. He who hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches: He that overcomes shall not be hurt of the second (or eternal) death.

12. And to the angel of the church of Pergamos write; These things saith he who hath the sharp two-edged sword, (Heb. iv. 12.) 13. I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is, yet thou holdest fast thy faith in my name, and hast not denied it, even in those days wherein
