Macedonians, Paul's fellow travellers. 30. And when Paul would have entered into the people, the disciples suffered him not. 31. And certain of the Asian magistrates being his friends, sent to him, desiring him not to adventure himself into the theatre. 32. Some, therefore, cried one thing, and some another; for the assembly was confused; and most part knew not wherefore they came together. 33. Then they pushed Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward, so he waved his hand, to make his defence to the people; 34. But knowing he was a Jew, they all with one voice, about two hours, cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 35. But the town-clerk having appeased the people, he said, Men of Ephesus, who knows not that the city of Ephesus worships the great goddess Diana, and the image which (as it is reported) fell down from Jupiter? 36. Seeing these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be. quiet, and do nothing rashly. 37. For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. 38. Therefore, if Demetrius, and the craftsmen with him, have a matter against any mati, court days are kept, and there are deputies; let them plead against one another. 39. But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. 40. For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's disturbance, as we can give no reason of this concourse. 41. And having thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

CHAP. XX.

PAUL GOETH TO MACEDONIA.

Now after the disturbance ceased, Paul called to him the disciples, and saluting them (with a farewell), he departed to go to Macedonia. 2.

Then going over those parts, and exhorting them much, he came into Greece, 3. And there abode three months; and the Jews lying in wait for him, when about to sail into Syria, he proposed to return thro' Macedonia: 4. And there accompanied him as far as to Asia, Sopater a Berean, and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus, with Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and of (the Lesser) Asia, Tychicus, and Trophimus. 5. These, going before, tarried for us at Troas. 6. And we sailing away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, came to them at Troas in five days; where we abode seven days.

7.¶ Then on the first day of the week, when the disciples assembled to break bread, (at the Lord's supper), Paul preached to them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speecl till midnight. 8. And there were many lights in the upper chamber where they assembled. .:

9. Now there sat in a window a young man nam ed Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep, as Paul preached long, he sunk down with sleep, and falling from the third stage to the ground, was taken up dead. 10. But Paul went down, and fell on him, embracing him, and said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11. When he came up, and had broke bread, and eaten, and conversed much, even till break of day, he depart ed. 12. Now they brought the young man, alive, and were not a little comforted.

13. We then going before. to the ship, sailed to Assos, there intending to take in Paul; for so he had appointed, intending himself to go by land. 14. And meeting with us at Assos we took him in, and came to Mitylene. 15. And we sailed thence, and came the next day opposite to Chios; and the next after that we arrived at Samos, and tarried in Trogyllium; and the next again we came to Miletus. 16. For Paul determined to sail by E.

phesus, for he would not spend much time in (the Lesser) Asia; for he hasted, if possible, to be at Jerusalem at Pentecost.

17. So from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the presbyters of the church. 18. And, being come, he said to them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into (the Lesser) Asia, how I have conducted myself with you at all seasons, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with tears and trials which befel me by the lying in wait of the Jews; 20. And how I kept back nothing profitable to you, but shewed you it, and taught you publicly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews and Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22. And now, lo, I go by the Spirit's impulse to Jerusalem, not knowing what things shall befal me there: 23. Except that the Holy Spirit testifieth, That bonds and afflictions abide me in every city. 24. But none of these things move me; neither reckon I my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my course with joy, and the ministry I received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 25. And now, lo, I know, that all you among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. 26. Therefore I testify to you this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. 27. For I have kept nothing back, but declared to you all the counsel of God.

28. Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of Christ, which he purchased with his own blood. 29. For I know that after my departing, grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30. Of your ownselves also, shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw disciples after them. 31. Therefore watch, and remember, that during

three years, I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. 32. And now, brethren, I commit you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, (in faith and holiness,) and to give you an inheritance (in heaven) among all who are sanctified. 33. I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel. 34. Yea, yourselves know, that these hands have ministered to my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35. I shewed you in all things, that by so labouring ye ought to support the needy, (Eph. iv. 28.) and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, who said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

36. Now having thus spoken, he kneeled down and prayed with them all. 37. Now they all wept much, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him; 38. Sorrowing most of all, that he had said they should see his face no more. So they accompanied him to the ship.

PAUL GOETH TO JERUSALEM.

Now having got away from them, we launched and came with a straight course to Coos, and the day following to Rhodes, and thence to Patara; 2. And finding a ship sailing over to Phenicia, we went aboard, and set out. 3. And having discovered Cyprus, which leaving on the left hand, we sailed to Syria, and landed at Tyre; for there the ship was to unlade her burden. 4. And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days; they said to Paul, thro' the Spirit, that he would not go up to Jerusalem, (without danger). 5. And having accomplished those days, we departed and went on, and they all conducted us, with wives and children, out of the city; then we kneeled down on the shore and prayed. 6. And taking leave of one another, we went into the ship; and they returned home. 7. And having finished our voyage from Tyre, we

came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day. 8. And the next day we of Paul's company departed, and came to Cesarea; where we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven (deacons), and abode with him. (vi. 5.) 9. And he had four virgin daughters, who prophesied.

10. And as we abode there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet named Agabus. 11. Who took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, saying, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, so shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind this girdle's owner, and deliver him to the Gentiles. 12. And hearing these things, both we and they of that place besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13. Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep, and break mine heart? for I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem, for the name of the Lord Jesus. 14. So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, say.. ing, The will of the Lord be done.

15. And after those days, taking up our baggage, we went up to Jerusalem. 16. There went with us also certain of the disciples at Cesarea, whọ brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we should lodge, (as he had a house at Jerusalem).

17. And being come to Jerusalem, the breth ren received us gladly.

18. And the day following, Paul went with us to James; and all the elders were present. 19. And when he saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.

20. And hearing it they glorified the Lord, and said to him, Thou seest brother, how many ten thousands of Jews believe, who are all zealous of the (ceremonial) law. 21. And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses' (law), say.
