therein, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands; (he is not comprehended.) 25. Nor is he served by (gifts from) men's hands, as if he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26. And bath made of the same blood all nations of men that dwell on all the earth, and determined the appointed times, and the bounds of their habitations. 27. That they should seek God if perhaps they inight feel him out and find him, (by the dim light of nature) tho' he be not far from every one of us; 28. For in him, (by his power and goodness) we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets, even (Aratus,) have said, For we are also his offspring. 29. Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think the Divinity is like gold, or silver, or stone engraven by art and man's device. 30. The times indeed of ignorance God bore with; but now commands all men every where to repent. 31. Because he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath appointed; having given assurance to all of it, in raising him from the dead.

32. Now hearing of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: but others said, We will hear thee again concerning this. 33. So Paul departed from them. 34. But certain men joined with him, and believed; among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite, (a courtier) and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

CHAP. XVIII.

PAUL LABOURETH WITH HIS HANDS.

AFTER these things, Paul left Athens, and came to Corinth; 2. And finding a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had com

manded all Jews to depart from Rome, he came unto them. 3. Being of the same craft he abode with them, and wrought: for they were' tent-makers by trade. 4. Then he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

5. And when Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. 6. But as they opposed him, and blasphemed, he shook (the dust off) his raiment, (for a witness) saying, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am pure from it; henceforth I will go to the Gentiles.

7. ¶ So he departed, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one who worshipped God, whose house was joined to the synagogue. 8. Now Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; many of the Corinthians also hearing, believed, and were baptized.

9. Then the Lord spake to Paul by night in a vision, Do not fear, but speak, and be not silent; 10. For I am with thee, and none shall fall on thee to hurt thee; for I have much people in this city. 11. So he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

12. But when Gallio was the proconsul of A. chaia the Jews made insurrection together against Paul, and brought him to the judgment-seat, 13. Saying, he persuades men to worship God contrary to the law. 14. Now Paul being about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked mischief, ye Jews! by reason I should bear with you: 15. But if it be a question about doctrine, and names, and your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters. So he drove them from the judgment-seat. 17. Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the

judgment-seat; but Gallio cared for none of those things.

18. After this Paul abode there yet many days, and then taking his leave of the brethren, he sailed thence into Syria, with Priscilla and Aquila, he having shorn his head in Cenchrea; for he had a (Nazarites') vow, (1 Cor. ix. 20.) 19. Then coming to Ephesus, he left them there; where he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. 20. When they desired him to stay longer with them he consented not; 21. But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep the approaching feast in Jerusalem: but I will return to you, God willing, then. And he sailed from Ephesus. 22. And having landed at Cesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. 23. And having spent some time there, he departed, and went forward over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia, confirming all the disciples.

24. ¶ Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25. He was instructed in the gospel of the Lord (Jesus;) and, being fervent in spirit, very zealous, he spake and taught diligently the doctrines of the Lord, knowing only John's baptism. 26. Now he spake boldly in the synagogue; whom Aquila and Priscilla hearing, they took him, and explained to him the gospel of God more perfectly. 27. And being disposed to pass into Achaia the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; who, being come, helped them much who had thro' grace believed; 28. For he mightily convinced the Jews, in public, proving by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. CHAP. XIX.

THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN.

Now while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, hav

ing passed through the upper coasts, came to E phesus: and finding some disciples, 2. He said to them, Have ye received the (gifts of the) Holy Spirit since ye believed? but they said to him, We have not even heard whether any (have received the) Holy Spirit. 3. Then he said to them, With what then were ye baptized? And they said, With John's baptism.

4. Then Paul said, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people, They should believe on him, who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5. Having heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6. And, Paul, having laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spake different languages, and prophesied. 7. And all the men were about twelve.

8. Then he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly, disputing three months, and persuading them about the things concerning the kingdom of God. 9. But some were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude; so departing from them, he separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. 10. And this was done two years; so all in (the Lesser) Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. 11. And God wrought special miracles by Paul's hands. 12. For from his body were brought to the sick handker chiefs or aprons, and the diseases left them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13. Then certain Jews that went about for conjurers, attempted to call the name of the Lord. Jesus over them who had evil spirits, saying, We conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth. 14. And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew, and chief of the priests, who did so. 15. But the evil spirit answered, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16. Then the man in whom the

evil spirit was, leaped on them, and prevailed so against them, that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks dwelling at Ephesus; so tear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18. Then many that believed came, and confessing and declaring their (evil) deeds; 19. Many also who used magical arts brought their books together, and burned them before all: and counting their price, found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20. So mightily grew the word of God and prevail

21. These things being ended, Paul firmly purposed in the spirit, after passing thro' Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there I must also see Rome. 22. And sending into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus; he waited a while, in Asia. 23. At which time there arose no small disturbance about that way; 24. For a certain man, named Demetrius, a silver-smith, who made silver models of Diana's temple and image, brought no small gain to the workmen; 25. Whom he called together, with these that were at such work, saying, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth; 26. Moreover, ye see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying, They are no gods which are made with hands; 27. So not only this our craft is in danger to be of no account; but the temple of the great goddess Diana to be despised, and her magnificence to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. 28. And hearing this, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 29. Then the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed violently into the theatre, and seized Gaius and Aristarchus,
