Verily, verily, I tell you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see (future misery, or eternal) death.

52. Then said the Jews to him, Now we know thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my words he shall never see death. 53. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets also; whom makest thou thyself?

54. Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing; it is my Father that honoureth me, of whom ye say, he is your God. 55. Yet ye know him not; but I know him: and if I would say I know him not, I would speak falsely like you; but I know him, and keep his saying. 56. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day (by faith, at a distance, Heb. xi. 13.) and he thus saw it, and was glad.

57. Then said the Jews to him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58. Jesus said to them, Verily, verily I tell you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59. Then took they up stones to cast at him; but Jesus concealed himself, then he went out of the temple, going thro' the midst of them, and so passed by.

CHAP. IX.

A BLIND MAN RECEIVETH SIGHT.

Now as Jesus passed by, he saw a man born blind. 2. Then his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who sinned, this man's (soul before it came into this body,) or his parents, that he was born blind? 3. Jesus answered, Neither by this man's sin nor his parents was he born blind, but that the works of God might be manifested in him.

4. I must work his works who sent me while it is day; the night (of death) cometh, when no man

can work. 5. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6. Having thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay with the spittle, and spread the clay on the eyes of the blind man. 7. And said to him, Go wash in the pool of Siloam, which is, by interpretation, Sent. So he departed, and washed, and came seeing.

8. ¶ Now the neighbours, and they who had seen before that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? 9. Some said, This is he; others said, He is like him; but he said, I am he.

10. Then said they to him, How were thine eyes opened? 11. He replied, A man called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam, and wash; so I went and washed, and received sight.

12. Then said they to him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

13. They brought him to the Pharisees that was blind before. 14. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15. Then the Pharisees asked him again, how he had received his sight. He said to them, He put clay on mine eyes, and I washed, and see.

16. But some of the Pharisees said, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinner do such miracles? So they were divided.

17. They said to the blind man again, What sayest thou of him who opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

18. But the Jews believed not concerning him that he was blind, and received his sight, till they called his parents, 19. And asked them, Is this your son who was born blind? how then doth he now see?

20. His parents replied, We know this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21. But by what

means he now seeth; or who hath opened his eyes we know not. He is of age, ask him, he shall speak for himself.

22. Thus spake his parents, because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had agreed, that if any confessed he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. 23. Therefore said they, He is of age,

ask him.

24. They called again the man that was blind, and said to him, Give God the praise; we know this man is a sinner. 25. He answered, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not; one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.

26. Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? 27. He answered them, I told you already, and ye hearkened not. Wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

28. Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are Moses' disciples. 29. We know God spake to Moses; but we know not whence this man is. 30. He answered them, This is a wonderful thing, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes. 31. Now, wc know that God heareth not sinners; but if any worship God, and do his will, him he heareth. 32. Since the world began it was not heard that any man opened the eyes of one born blind. 33. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

34. They answered him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? So they cast him out (of the synagogue). 35. Jesus heard that they cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36. He answered, Who is he that I might believe on him? 37. Then Jesus said to him, thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. 38. Then he said, Lord, I believe. So he worshipped him.

39. Then Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they who see not might see, and that they who (boast that they) see, might be left to their blindness, (Psal. lxxxi. 12.) 40. Then some of the Pharisees, who were with him, heard these words, and said, Are we blind also? 41. Jesus said, if ye were blind (or entirely ignorant) ye would have no sin; but now ye say, we see, (tho' ye shut your eyes at the truth) therefore your sin remaineth.

CHAP. X.

CHRIST THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

VERILY, verily, I tell you, He who enters not by the door into the sheep-fold, but climbs up some other way, is a thief and a robber. (Ezek. xxxiv. 31. Psalm xxiii. 1.) 2. But he that enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3. To him the porter opens, and the sheep hearken to his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out (to the pasture, whither they follow him). 4. And, when he brings forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and they follow him: for they know his voice. 5. But a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him; for they know not the voice of strangers.

6. This parable spake Jesus to them: but they understood not what he said to them.

7. Then said Jesus to them again, Verily, verily, I tell you, I am the door of the sheep. 7. All that ever came before me (in their own authority, and not sent nor called) are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not hear them. 9. I am the door; by me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10. The thief cometh not but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11. I am the good shepherd, who gives his life for the

sheep. 12. But an hireling, who is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf (the persecuting seducer) coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth; and the wolf catcheth or scattereth the sheep. 13. The hireling fleeth, be cause he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. 14. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known by mine. 15. As the Father knoweth me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16. And other sheep (among the Gentiles) I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one flock, and one shepherd. 17. Therefore my Father loves me, because I lay down my life to take it again. 18, None taketh it from me (against my will,) but I lay it down of myself; I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commission I received of my Father.

19. There was a division, therefore, again among the Jews for these sayings. 20. For many said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? 21. Others said, These are not the words of one that hath a devil: can a devil open the eyes of the blind?

22. Now the feast of the dedication (of the temple; after Epiphanes' profanation of it, 1 Maccab. iv. 2 Maccab. i.) was at Jerusalem, in winter. 13. And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

26.

24. Then the Jews surrounded him, and said, How long makest thou us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25. Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not; the works that I do in my Father's name bear witness of me. But ye believe not; because ye are not of my sheep, as I said to you. 27. My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me; 28. And I give to them eternal life; so they shall never perish,
