the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful, and to the evil. 36. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

37. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven (on repentance); 38. Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall (good) men give into your bosom; for with the same measure ye use, it shall be measured to you again.

39. He spake also a parable to them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall not both fall into the ditch? 40. The disciple is not above his master; but every one that is perfected shall be as his master. 41. And why observest thou thy neighbour's smaller faults, but regardest not thine own which are greater?

42. Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the speck in thine eye, when thou beholdest not the splinter in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, pull first the splinter out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull the speck out of thy brother's eye. 43. For a good tree yields not corrupt fruit; nor doth a corrupt tree yield good fruit. 44. For every tree is known by its own fruit; for men do not gather figs of thorns, nor grapes of a bramble-bush. 45. A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth good; and an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth evil: for from the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

46. And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

47. Whoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and doeth them: 48. He is like a man who built an house, and having digged deep, laid the foundation on a rock; and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently on that house, but could

not shake it; for it was founded upon a rock 49. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man who, without a foundation, built an house on the earth, against which the stream beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and its ruin was great.

CHAP. VII.

THE CENTURION'S FAITH.

Now having ended all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

2. Now a certain centurion's servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. 3. And hearing of Jesus, he sent to him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him to come and heal his servant. 4. So being come to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, He was worthy for whom he should do this; 5. For he loveth our nation, and built us a synagogue.

6. Then Jesus went with them. And coming near the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy of thy coming under my roof: 7. Therefore, I thought not myself worthy to come to thee; but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 8. For thus I who am in authority, having soldiers under me; say to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it; (and diseases are as much at thy command, as my servants are at mine.)

9. Now Jesus hearing these things wondered at him, and turning about, said to the people that followed him, I tell you, I have not found so great faith, not even in Israel.

10. Now they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant healed.

11. ¶ And the day after, he went into a city called Nain, with many of his disciples, and much people.

12. And being near the city gate, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of a widow mother: and many citizens were with her. 13. Now the Lord seeing her had compassion on her, and said to her, Weep not. 14. Then he came and touched the bier, so they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say to thee, Arise, 15. Then he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

16. Now fear seized them all: and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is risen among us; and God hath visited his people.

17. And this rumour of him went thro' all Judea, and all the region around.

18. Then John's disciples told him of all these things.

19. Now John calling two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou the Messiah that should come, or must we yet look for him?

20. And the men coming to him, said, John Baptist sent us to thee, saying, Art thou the Messiah that should come, or must we look for another?

21. And in that same hour he cured many of infirmities and grievous diseases, and of evil spi rits; and to many blind he gave sight.

22. Then Jesus, said to them, Go and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. 23. And blessed is he who shall not be offended at my low condition, (and want of worldly greatness.)

24. And the messengers of John being de parted, he spoke to the people concerning John. What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A man not wavering, nor unsteady, like a reed shaken with the wind? 25. But what went ye out to

see? A man luxuriously clothed in soft raiment? Lo, they who are gorgeously apparelled, and live luxuriously, are in king's courts. 26. But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I tell you, and much more than a prophet (of the Old Testament). 27. This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, to prepare thy way before thee, (by publishing that thou art the Messiah). 28. For I tell you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the church, when it is planted, is greater than he; (as the noon-day's light is greater than the morning dawn). 29. Now all the people and the publi cans that heard him, glorified God, being baptized with John's baptism.

30. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God, for their good, (so that it became a testimony against them) not being baptized of

him.

31. Now the Lord said, Whereunto shall I liken the men of this generation? and what do they resemble? 32. They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling to one another, saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. (They will neither be allured by good, nor alarmed by evil.) 38. For John the Baptist came (in a reserved, severe manner) neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a devil. 34. The Son of man came (in a free, social manner), eating and drinking, and ye say, Behold, an epicure, a friend of publicans and sinners, (be. cause he ate and drank with them, and then converted them.) 35. But wisdom is justified of all her children, (by walking in her ways.)

36. Now one of the Pharisees desired him to eat with him. So he went into his house, and sat down to meat.

37. And, lo, a woman in the city, who had been a sinner, knowing that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38. And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and washed his feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

39. Now the Pharisee seeing it, said within himself, If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is that touched him; for she is a sinner. 40. Then Jesus said, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. So he saith, Master, say on. 41. A certain creditor had two debtors; the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 42. And having nothing to pay, he freely forgave them both. Tell me, therefore, who of them will love him most?

43. Simon replied, I suppose he to whom he forgave most, Then he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged. 44. Then he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45. Thou gavest me no salutation; but this woman, since I came in, ceased not to salute my feet. 4.6. Mine head with oil thou didst not anoint; but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

Therefore, I tell thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; therefore she loved me much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little 48. Then he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven?

49. Now they that sat at meat with him, said, within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50. But he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
