19. But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils he had done, 20. Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

CHAP. IV.

CHRIST'S FASTING AND TEMPTATION.

JESUS being full of the Holy Spirit, returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. 2. Being forty days tempted by the devil, during which he ate nothing, he was afterward hungry.

3. Then the devil said to him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. 4. But Jesus answered, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing God hath appointed.

5. Then the devil taking him up an high mountain, shewed him (in an airy vision) all the kingdoms of the empire in a moment of time. 6. Then the devil said to him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: (for I have assumed a power over the earth, the sea, and the air, and favour the wicked that rebel against God, John xiv. 30. 2 Cor. iv. 4. Ephes. ii. 2. Job i. 12.) 7. If therefore, thou wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8. But Jesus said to him, Go behind me, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship only the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

9. Then he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a turret of the temple, and said to him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence; 10. For it is written, He shall command his angels concerning thee, to keep thee; 11. And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12. But Jesus replied to him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13. And the devil having ended all the temptation, departed from him for a time.

14. Then Jesus returned by the (impulsive) power of the (Divine) Spirit into Galilee, (to execute the mediatory office); and his fame spread thro' all the region around. 15. And he taught in their synagogues, being extolled by all.

16. He came to Nazareth also, where he was brought up; and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.

17. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was delivered to him; and, having opened it, he found written, 18. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, he hath anointed (commissioned and qualified) me to preach the gospel to the poor (and humble); he sent me to heal the broken hearted (for sin); to preach deliverance to the captives (of sin and Satan), and recovering of sight to the blind, (naturally and spritually); to set at liberty (from the bondage of fear) them that are bruised (with a sense of sin, and the punishment due to it). 19. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, (the great gospel jubilee of spiritual liberty, Lev. xxv. Deut. xv. Isa. Ixi. the accepted time, and day of grace and mercy, and season of salvation. 2 Cor. vi. 2.)

20. Then he closed the book, and gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21. Then he said to them, This day is this scrip. ture fulfilled in your ears.

22. And they all testified of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And said, Is not this Joseph's son?

23. Then he said to them, Ye will surely repeat to me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself. Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. 24. But he said, Verily, I tell you, No prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25. But I tell you certainly, Many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and great famine was throughout all the land; 26. But to none of them was Elias sent, except to Sarepta, a city of Sidon, to a widow woman. 27. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet, but none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.

28. Now all in the synagogue hearing these things, were filled with wrath. 29. And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, to cast him down headlong. 30. But he, passing through the midst of them, went away, 31. And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbaths. 32. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with authority.

33. Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean devil, who cried aloud, 34. Saying, Let us alone; what hast thou to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thou art the holy One of God.

35. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him. And then the devil throwing him in the midst, came out of him, and hurt him not.

36. Now they were all amazed, and said among themselves, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.

37. So his fame went into every place of the country around.

38. Now he went out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house: whose wife's mother was seized with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 39. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose, and ministered to them.

40. Now when the sun's light was departing, all who had any sick with various diseases, brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them, and healed them.

41. Even the devils also came out of many, crying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. But he rebuking them, suffered them not to speak further that they knew he was Christ.

42. Now when it was day he departed into a desert place; and the multitudes sought him, and came to him, to hinder him to depart from them. 43. But he said to them, I must preach the glad tidings of the kingdom of God to other cities also, for therefore am I sent.

44. So he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

CHAP. V.

CHRIST TEACHETH THE PEOPLE.

Now as he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, the people pressed on him to hear the word of God, 2. And he saw two ships standing by the lake; but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3. Then he entered into one of them, which was Simon's, and entreating him to thrust out a little from the land, he sat down, and taught the multitudes out of the ship.

4. When he left speaking, he said to Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
