'For boys who enjoy a country life we can warmly commend this book. The style of the author is easy, perspicuous, and not too scientific. The woodcuts illustrative of submarine life and insect development are exceedingly good." SATURDAY REVIEW.

'The English translation of this French work is a splendid volume, with many beautiful illustrations. It describes in a familiar and conversational style many of the leading facts in zoology, and is well calculated to develop a taste for studies in natural history in the young student, and so lead him on to seek in other and less elementary works additional and more precise information. Much pleasure and information will be gained by a perusal of this excellent work.' GLASGOW HERALD.

THE LAND OF THE MOUNTAIN KINGDOM: a Narrative of Adventure in the Unknown Mountains of Thibet. By D. LAWSON JOHNSTONE. Numerous Illustrations. Crown 8vo. cloth extra, 58.

"The Mountain Kingdom" is a narrative of adventure written quite in M. Jules Verne's manner, and with much of his strength. It relates the extraordinary occurrences that befell an English party in a remote kingdom of India.'-SCOTSMAN.

Readers of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' will find this to be a charming companion to that work.

'A delightful miscellany, instructive, amusing, and of marvellous diversity.'-SATURDAY REVIEW. HARPER'S YOUNG PEOPLE. Volume for 1888. 4to. in handsome cloth cover, 78. 6d.; gilt edges, 88. Containing Hundreds of Original Stories, Hundreds of Illustrations, and Twelve Coloured Plates.

6 Turning over the pages of "Harper's Young People," we have come to this conclusion, that it must be a dull child who will not find materials in it for merry and happy hours.'--GRAPHIC.

"Harper's Young People" is more popular in price and less luxurious in get up, but it contains more matter, and is so admirably edited and written that it can hold its own against all rivals. . . . The clever and laughable humorous woodcuts are a special feature.'-MANCHESTER EXAMINER.

The volume is, as usual, handsome and portly. Its contents are very diversified, and among its many illustrations are not a few which are much to be commended. It is the best American magazine for the young with which we are acquainted.'-QUEEN.

"Harper's Young People" is as good as ever, and perhaps a little better. . . . This year there are plenty of good stories, merry jokes, and clever pictures.'-DAILY TELEGRAPH. (See also full-page Advertisement.)

Since the publication of Faulkner's work in 1820, no history of Kensington pretending to accuracy or completeness has been produced. This sumptuous work contains full and descriptive accounts of the parish of Kensington and the adjoining Palace and Gardens, with the changes and improvements of the past half century or more; notices of Kensington celebrities and of the great national institutions which have sprung up at Kensington Gore and Brompton Park; and a fund of discursive matter of local and historical interest. regard to the very numerous and absolutely faithful illustrations, two years have been spent by the artist in making for this work original drawings of old and modern Kensington. They include artistic exteriors and interiors; glimpses of Kensington Gardens; the Palace in which the Queen was born; the park; the people, streets, houses, churches, and ruins; and pretty, quaint, and taking 'bits' of Kensington scenery. All the drawings have been engraved in Paris in the finest possible manner, and the paper on which they are printed has been specially manufactured of a quality to ensure the delicacy of the originals being fully retained.

For the curious, a few PROOF copies of KENSINGTON : PICTURESQUE and HISTORICAL at five guineas, bound in full morocco, have painted in water-colours on the front, under the gilt edges of the leaves, a couple of Kensington views, which, until the leaves are bent back at an angle, are invisible.

LONDON: FIELD & TUER, The Leadenhall Press, E.C.

*Mr. LOFTIE's new book, "Kensington: Picturesque and Historical," is to have a novel binding. Beyond the title in gold, the round bevel-edged cloth-covered boards are to be devoid of ornament except on the inner edge, which will have a "roll" in gold of the same character that a good binder puts on morocco and russia.'-ATHENÆUM.

THE

LIBRARY.

A Magazine of Bibliography, Literature and Criticism.

The Organ of the Library Association of the United Kingdom.

The Library Association have arranged to publish, under the above title, a new Monthly Magazine, the first Number of which will appear on December 24th.

As their organ, the Magazine will endeavour to advance the objects of the Association, will advocate the Free Library Movement, and deal with the many important questions affecting the management and administration of public and private libraries.

But THE LIBRARY will have another, and, to the reader of literary tastes, a more attractive side: every number will contain original literary articles of the most eclectic variety, for the high character of which the names contained in the following list of contributors will amply vouch. Among them are writers of erudition who will speak with authority on curious questions of bibliographical learning-experts in every department of book-lore who will discourse of the book from its birth to the latest chef d'œuvre of the Quantin Press.

Others will make it their business to do tardy justice to forgotten or little-known book men, whose claims upon the blographer are often in inverse ratio to the attention bestowed upon them. In this department alone there is a rich mine of ore only waiting to be brought to the surface.

Every true book-lover dearly loves gossip of his own Fach, and to this amiable taste THE LIBRARY will endeavour to cater-not as a mere gatherer of unconsidered trifles, but rather as a gleaner of goodly wheat that the busy harvesters of literature are compelled to pass by until they have time.' Waifs and strays, chips from literary workshops, so often lost for ever in the whirl of life's tempests, will be collected and preserved in THE LIBRARY.

Descriptive Reviews of Books about books will be a leading feature of the new Magazine, and it will also contain a complete monthly record of all bibliographical publications at home and abroad. The collecting of books and the prices they realise; the stories of rare books, and the records of remarkable book auctions, will all find a place in THE LIBRARY; while the admission of correspondence on bibliographical topics of general interest will make it an excellent means of communication between librarians and others.

Among the contributors who have promised papers to early numbers of THE LIBRARY are the following:
