OUR RECENT ACTORS: being Recollections Critical, and in

many cases Personal, of late Distinguished Performers of both Sexes. With some Incidental Notices of Living Actors. By Dr. WESTLAND MARSTON. 2 vols. crown 8vo. cloth, 218. The anecdotes relating to famous performers of both sexes are full of persona' interest, the criticisms are subtle and scholarly, and the book is written in such choice English, and with such purity and picturesqueness of style, that to read it is an intellectual treat.'-MORNING POST.

'Mr. Marston's volumes will take rank among the very few English books of stage anecdote which are written in a cultivated style, and marked throughout with thoughtful discrimination. No one who feels an interest in the stage can fail to read them with pleasure.'-DAILY NEWS.

'It has often been a subject for regret that the important dramatic period ranging between the retir ment of Macready from the stage and the managerial career of Henry Irving has not been adequately represented by the accurate historian or scholarly critic. The lives hitherto published of Charles Kean and Samuel Phelps have their value, but they are not wholly satisfactory works. The difficulty will be in a measure removed by the recollections of famous actors of his time recently written by the scholar and dramatist Dr. Westland Marston, whose book is distinctly the most valuable and trustworthy account of the art of acting since George Henry Lewes gave us his delightful volume.'-DAILY TELEGRAPH.

The book of the sea-on.... Every body must read it.'-SUNDAY TIMES.

THE FATAL ILLNESS OF FREDERICK

THE

NOBLE. By Sir MORELL MACKENZIE, &C. Crown 8vo. limp cloth, with Facsimiles of the late Emperor's Handwriting, and 22 Woodcuts, 250 pages, limp cloth, 28. 6d.

'Had Sir Morell Mackenzie done nothing but rescue the late Kaiser from the knives of his experimental surgeons he would have rendered him a priceless service. . . . Sir M. Mackenzie's triumphant vindication of his professional conduct is all the more remarkable that it is based entirely on medical grounds. . . . Sir M. M. might well bave left his enemies to stew in the juice of their own impotent spite. . . . but, from the reader's point of view, it would have been a pity if his book had remained in the limbo of things that might have been. It is capital reading; the author's very idiosyncrasies are amusing. His delight in Bergmann-baiting is refreshing in these days of languid æsthetes and molluscous mashers; the unfortunate man is hunted and harried till the life is out of him, and his mangled remains are then dragged about like those of Hector by the vengeful Achilles. Even in the index he is not allowed to rest; the references to him are made in a style which recalls Johnson's definition of a patriot.'-TRUTH.

'As a complete and conclusive vindication of himselt Sir Morell Mackenzie's book leaves nothing whatever to be desired. Sir Morell's work is of interest and importance.'—WORLD. The historical section of the book, which occupies more than three-fourths of the volume, is the part that will be studied with most interest.'-MORNING POST.
