'The Best of all Children's Magazines.'

SPECTATOR.

THE NOVEMBER PART COMMENCES A NEW VOLUME.

ST. NICHOLAS for 1888-9.

ST.

AN 'ALL-AROUND THE WORLD' YEAR.

NICHOLAS for the coming year will tell English boys and girls of the thousands of millions of children of other countries: of French girls in their little black alpaca aprons, and German girls with their flaxen hair, and Italian boys with their dark eyes, and clever American children (the cleverest take in St. Nicholas), and little Chinese maidens with their almond-eyes and long pig-tails, and woolly-headed African pickaninnies; of the homes of all these children, of the toys of the shy Japanese, of the pine woods of the blue-eyed Norwegians, of the furs and toboganning of the Canadians, of the gum trees and kangaroos of the Australians, of the sharks and clear blue seas of the chocolate-skinned South Sea Islanders-in fact, of nearly everything that amuses girls and interests boys, from the nursery rhymes of the Hottentot mothers to the guns and spears that the Icelandic fathers use to kill the white bears, St. Nicholas means to tell its readers in Great Britain and Ireland. Besides all these pictures and stories of other people, there will be special articles

FOR BOYS

on Wood Carving and other Art. Handiwork; on Boys' Sports and Games; on Ancient and Modern Artillery-from the Catapult to the Maxim Gun; and on The Distances in Space, a paper all about the Sun, and Moon, and Stars.

FOR GIRLS

there will be Dream Horses, by MARY HALLOCK FOOTE; The Bunny Stories; and many Fairy Stories and Fanciful Tales.

FOR VERY LITTLE FOLK

there will be The Brownies (Policeman, Irishman, and all the rest); the Ballad of the Runaway Donkey; while there will be Lively and Amusing Reading for tired School-children who would rather not learn anything for the next half-hour.'

The BIRKENHEAD ADVERTISER says: The CHURCH MONTHLY will soon become the Parish Magazine of the country.'

24 pp. crown 4to. splendidly Illustrated, price ld.

THE CHURCH MONTHLY.

Edited by FREDK. SHERLOCK,

Author of 'More than Conquerors,' 'Illustrious Abstainers,' &c.: late Hon. Editorial Secretary of the Church of England Temperance Society; late Editor of Hand and Heart, &c.

THE CHURCH MONTHLY is conducted entirely on non-party lines, so that any Clergyman adopting it may rest assured that the Magazine will never introduce a partisau spirit among his Parishioners.

THE CHURCH MONTHLY advocates Temperance on the lines of the C.E.T.S.; and Thrift, Sanitation, Cooking, Gardening, Poultry-keeping, Bee-keeping, and other topics interesting to Artisans and Cottagers are dealt with by competent Writers.

THE CHURCH MONTHLY is particularly suited for localisation. The press throughout the country is most unanimous in its opinion on this point, and also as to its general excellence as an Illustrated Magazine. Booksellers and Printers who may be on the look out for a Magazine for localising will do well to apply for specimens and terms. We append

SOME OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

'The illustrations are numerous and well executed. Purchasers of the Church Monthly will certainly have a good return for their penny. This magazine is excellently adapted for localisation.'-THE RECORD.

It gives plenty of matter and several illustrations. It is a meritorious venture and should be encouraged. We recommend our clerical friends to send for a copy.'

CHURCH TIMES. 'Admirably got up. The pictures are far above the average.'-JOHN BULL.

It is excellent, and even improves each month.'

CHURCH BELLS.

'Well worth the attention of the Clergy.'

ECCLESIASTICAL GAZETTE. 'Bright and attractive. The illustrations are excellent.'-FAMILY CHURCHMAN.

Worth the attention of all those who are looking out for a new magazine, or who want a Monthly which is really a Church magazine.'-CHURCH IN THE WEST.

Bids fair to secure a permanent position among orthodox serials.'-NATIONAL CHURCH.

'One of the very best magazines we know of for parish localisation.'-ELY DIOCESAN REMEMBRANCER.

[blocks in formation]

'Its contents are admirably adapted for the household.' WEST CUMBERLAND TIMES. 'The Church Monthly is capitally illustrated and full of excellent letterpress.'-LEAMINGTON SPA COURIER.

'A capital new penny magazine for parish localisation. Good printing, good stories, and good illustrations.' WEEKLY TIMES and ECHO.

The Church Monthly is the best form of parochial magazine we have lately seen. We commend this magazine to the notice of incumbents who are anxious to develop a healthier tone on Church matters among parishioners.'-WELLINGBOROUGH POST.

IS THE TITLE OF THE NEW, ORIGINAL, AND REMARKABLE STORY WHICH WILL FORM

GRANT & CO.'S CHRISTMAS NUMBER FOR 1888. Fifteenth Year of Publication.

The story touches the obscure but interesting Jacobite plots. The scene is laid partly in the city of Gloucester, partly on the borders of what was then the almost savage region of the Forest of Dean. There is not a character or incident in this strange story, however unlikely or romantic it may seem, which is not needful to account for the question which was submitted to some barrister learned in the law for his opinion in the days of the grandfathers of many persons who are now living. 'A CHRISTMAS ROSE,' the fifteenth of the famous series of Mr. Francillon's Christmas Stories, will certainly be welcomed as a brilliant addition to the long roll which began with 'Like a Snowball' &c. &c.
