HE present is a time especially noteworthy in the history of the Colonies of Australasia, as marking the lapse of one hundred years since the formation of the first British Settlement in this great Island-Continent of the Southern Ocean; and the Centennial period is being duly celebrated at Melbourne, Victoria, by an International Exhibition, at which the Arts and Industries of most of the Great States of the World are specially and distinctively represented. The period will be further signalised (in the annals of Australian colonising development and successful agricultural settlement by the inauguration of a scheme which opens a new and most attractive channel for the speedy and very extensive augmentation of the number of cultivators of our antipodean soil, and, at the same time, will most effectually deal with that great deterrent obstacle to the agricultural prosperity of these Colonies, namely, the frequently recurrent and disastrous droughts. This enterprise embraces the formation of Two Irrigation Settlemens in the Colonies of Victoria and South Australia, on the most remarkable of our few great navigable rivers (the river Murray), which affords a practically inexhaustible supply of fresh and fertilising water for the maintenance of Vineyards, Orange Orchards, Fruit Farms, and General Agricultural Operations upon a scale of very considerable magnitude, the area of land now to be dealt with being Half-aMillion Acres, under agreements entered into by the Colonial Governments with the firm of CHAFFEY BROS., the wellknown irrigationists, late of Ontario, California. It is felt that this is but the exemplary beginning of a great movement in the direction of irrigation settlement throughout Australia, so far as circumstances will permit, as regards the existing water facilities of the different Colonies, and the ability to supplement them by artificial arrangements. The magnitude and importance of these two great schemes, therefore, is generally recognised as marking a new era in the progress of Australian colonisation, as it is confidently anticipated that, under the wide and successful development of Agriculture which will be practicable by means of irrigation, there will be an unprecedented increase in the population of the Colonies in the early future, and a corresponding augmentation of internal trade and of commercial business with the Mother Country.
