The following story of the Opium War is, to all intents and purposes, a translation of the last two chapters of the Sheng Wu-Ki, or "Military Operations of the Present Dynasty." The author is Wei-Yuan, a Chinese, who held, about forty years ago, the post of Department Magistrate at Kao-Yu, north of Yangchow; and Wei-Yüan's style has been followed in the translation. Dates have been altered so as to convey definite ideas of time to European readers, and in some cases the Cantonese or other popular pronunciation is given to the names of places and persons well known in the south. The paper illustrates the extraordinary faithfulness with which the Chinese endeavour to perfect their histories, and this seems to have always been a national characteristic. In the work of solving the riddles of ancient and mediaval history, the Chinese records (if correctly translated) are likely to be found as faithful as any, though there may be mistakes.'-PREFACE. London: SAMPSON LOW, MARSTON, SEARLE & RIVINGTON, LIMITED, MAUD JEAN FRANC'S WORKS. These well-known and deservedly popular Books, well adapted for School Prizes for Girls and Boys, are now so cheap as to be accessible to every one, in a very attractive form. In one uniform series, handsome cloth binding, crown 8vo. 2s. 6d. These books for the most part point the moral of temperance, but the lesson to be learned will have an attraction, if not a fascination, for the young by being given amid bright pictures of domestic life and sunny hearths, in which childhood and youth are gracefully sketched in joyous innocence and nobleness. They have the merit of largely introducing modes of life novel to English readers. MINNIE'S MISSION: an Australian Temperance MARIAN; or, the Light of Some One's Home. Tale. NO LONGER A CHILD.
