two numbers, "01", refer to a specific ASPR paragraph. Often in the ASPR, paragraphs are followed by a series of subparagraphs. These subparagraphs further explain the ideas established by the paragraph. The relationship between the subparagraphs and their paragraph is connoted by giving the subparagraphs the number of their paragraph followed by a period and another number. Paragraph 3-201, which we have chosen for our example, has three subparagraphs. These are numbered 3-201.1, 3-201.2, and 3-201.3. Therefore, the material at 3-201.2(a), is located in one of these subparagraphs, namely 3-201.2. The letter "(a)" which follows all the numbers, refers to a specific unit of text within the subparagraph 3-201.2. (See diagram below.)

For purposes of numbering, an ASPR Appendix is the equivalent of an ASPR section. Thus, references to material located in Appendices A through O, Title 32, Parts 1-39, Volume III, are handled in the same manner as ASPR sections, except that in place of a first digit, a letter will appear. For example, material at "A-201.2 (a), would be found using the steps discussed above for 3-201.2(a) except that the "section" digit has been replaced by an "A" for Appendix A. For more information regarding the arrangement, numbering, citation, and cross referencing of the ASPR, see Section I, Part 1, Paragraph 03 (or “1–103”) of the ASPR itself.

CORRELATION OF CFR WITH ASPR

While much of the text of this edition of the ASPR is appearing for the first time in the FR/CFR system, a great deal of the material had been published in the last CFR edition revised as of July 1, 1974. Since this ASPR uses its own numbering system and the 1974 regulations used the standard CFR numbering system, comparison between the two will be difficult. Those doing research using the List of CFR Sections Affected (LSA) will note this problem. Effective with this edition, all LSA entries dealing with changes to the ASPR will reflect the use of the ASPR numbering system. The July 1, 1974 edition of Title 32, Parts 1-39, and all previous CFR editions, will reflect the use of standard CFR numbering in the LSA entries. To assist the user, we have prepared a table which shows the relationship between the former CFR text and the 1975 ASPR. The left column in the table contains a list of all former CFR parts. The column on the right identifies the corresponding material as it appears in this edition of the ASPR.

Users of the ASPR will note that former Part 30 was broken down into appendices A through O. Appendices F, G, J, L, N, and O'had no previous equivalent in earlier CFR editions. Consistent with its policy regarding publication of tabulated blank forms, the Office of the Federal Register is not reproducing the forms published in Appendix F-Illustrations of Standard and Department of Defense Forms. This edition of Appendix F will not contain the text of any form. Instead, Appendix F will consist of a list of forms.

Despite differences in numbering and style, the text of the former CFR editions and 1975 ASPRS contain many similarities. For the convenience of those users who may be using both editions, we have included the following example of similarities in 1974 and 1975 text on page x of this volume.
