Washington, November 22, 1867..

By direction of the Secretary of War, the monthly rate of commutation for quarters, fixed in General Orders No. 76, dated War Department, Adjutant General's Office, September 15, 1866, is, at the places hereinafter designated, increased to $18 per room:

Brownsville, Texas, to take effect from September 1, 1867.
Montgomery, Alabama, to take effect from November 1, 1867.
St. Louis, Missouri, to take effect from October 1, 1867.

GENERAL ORDERS

No. 101.

HEADQUARTERS OF THE ARMY,
ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE,
Washington, November 26, 1867.

The following orders have been received from the War Department and will be duly executed:

I.. All the regiments of infantry, and of artillery, except the ten light batteries, will be reduced to the minimum allowed by law, of fifty privates per company. The reduction will be by casualty, and when one company falls below the minimum it will be recruited by transfer from other com panies of the same regiment until all are at the minimum.

II..The General Recruiting Service will be immediately reduced by breaking up all excepting four principal rendezvous to each arm-cavalry and infantry—and ordering the surplus recruiting officers to their regiments. No more recruits will be sent to regiments until they are reduced as above ordered. This order will not be construed to prevent the reenlistment in their regiments of men who may be discharged by expiration of term of service.

III.. All volunteer officers now retained in service will be mustered out to take effect January 1, 1868, except the Commissioner and the disbursing officers of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. BY COMMAND OF GENERAL GRANT:

The accompanying table of the price of clothing and equipage for the Army of the United States, with the allowance to each soldier for clothing during his enlistment, and his proportion thereof for each year, is approved by the Secretary of War and published for the information and guidance of all concerned. It will take effect on and after the first of January, 1838, and will remain in force until further orders.
