Mr. Fazio. At this point I would like to insert several other questions to be answered for the record.

[The questions follow:]

Question. Provide us with data on the workload related to each source-committee and Member requests and mandates-during fiscal years 1979 and 1980, the number of reports or other outputs delivered, and the staffing required to service each. Also, give us your estimates for fiscal years 1981 and 1982.

Response. The requested information follows:

WORKLOAD AND PRODUCTS OF GAO AUDITING AND EVALUATION DIVISIONS FISCAL YEAR 1981 AND FISCAL YEAR 1982 ARE ESTIMATED

[blocks in formation]

Notes-Mandates are statutes requiring performance of specific audits and evaluations in a stated time frame. All of GAO's work is based on the requirements of legislation.

Question. What legislative mandates has GAO received in the past year, and how many staff years will be required for that work?

Response. During the past year (from January 1 to December 31, 1980) Congress enacted 29 statutes which will increase GAO's audit and evaluation workload by 94 staff years in fiscal year 1981 and by 95 staff years in fiscal year 1982. Of these, 6 statutes specifically require GAO to perform particular audits and evaluations in a timeframe stated in the legislation. These statutes will require 37 staff years in fiscal year 1981 and 35 staff years in fiscal year 1982. Certain of these will require work extending well beyond fiscal year 1982. For example, the Multi-employer Pension Amendments Act of 1980 requires a GAO report by June 30, 1985. During calendar year 1980, 7 Committee Reports direct GAO work that will require 25 staff years in fiscal year 1981 and 11 staff years in fiscal year 1982. These statutes and Committee Reports are listed on the attached.

GAO's fiscal year 1981 and fiscal year 1982 workload will be further increased by legislation enacted by the 97th Congress and by the requests of its Committees and Members. Work required to meet the requests of Committees and Members for audit and evaluation work has increased significantly in recent years.
