The entire remaining stock of this valuable Repository was destroyed by the Chinese during their destruction of the British Factories near Canton.

"This work, edited by the late Dr. Morrison, contains a great variety of valuable and curious papers."-MacCulloch.

This valuable Repository is of great importance to Oriental scholars; its scarcity is so great that few of the public Libraries of England can boast of complete sets; on the Continent the work is vainly sought after. Abel Remusat could never get sight of it, and complains of it in the pre

face to his Chinese Grammar.

China is a world of its own on this Globe; so much independent thought, and so many wonderful achievements in Arts, Literature and Industry, are entirely peculiar to the Chinese, that European Readers will derive the greatest interest and profit from the careful study of this "Chinese Repository," which embodies the most accurate recent information on the Celestial Empire. 1740 CORRESPONDENCE relating to China, consisting of papers presented to Parliament, 2 vols. in 1, folio, hf. calf, 5s

The subjects are drawn from the ancient Monuments at Alexandria, Memphis, the Pyramids, Thebes, &c. and were selected from some of those considered the most illustrative of the Chronological history and mythology of Egypt. It is a singularly curious and interesting work, and the impression very limited.

.

"The late Mr. Erskine translated the Memoirs of the Emperor Baber-the resuscitator of the dynasty of that mighty Tartar, who from the rank of a petty chieftain expanded into the conqueror of Tartary, India, Persia, Russia, and Central Asia; victor in thirty-five campaigns, and possessor of twenty-seven kingdoms: 'whose Ameers,' to use the words of Gibbon, traversed the river Irtish, and engraved in the forests of Siberia rude memorials of their exploits.' Baber, expelled from his native country and kingdom by the Uzbeks, and for some time a wanderer without a home, ended by acquiring the empire of India, and founding a house whose shade still haunts the once imperial Delhi; and whose ultimate descendant still exists, a memorial of greatness departed, and a continuing example of the pecuniary dishonesty of the trading sovereigns of India."
