$ 709.91 Headgear--(a) Cap, WAC. Of adopted design with rigid visor 238 inches in width at center, covered with same material as cap and having a sliding chin strap 36 inch in width of same material fastened at each end of visor with small regulation cap button. One center eyelet 138 inches below the top of crown to accommodate cap insignia; two eyelets 112 inches below the top of crown and 12 inch on each side of the back seam. Sides and crown to be reinforced with suitable stiffening material. [Par. 10]

(b) Cap, garrison, WAC. Of adopted design, a garrison cap following the contours of the head and shaped to fit snugly in the back, curtain finished with cord-edge braid (piping) of gold and black for officers, and of old gold and moss-tone green for enlisted women. The beige garrison cap for wear with the summer off-duty dress will conform in color and fabric to the summer off-duty dress.

CODIFICATION: In $ 709.91 the headnote, "Headgear" was added, the first paragraph was designated (a) and paragraph (b) was added, by AR 600-39, Jan. 5, 1944, as amended Aug. 4, 1944, 9 F.R. 10243.

$ 709.92 Jacket, wool, olive-drab, women's, oficer's—(a) Design, Of adopted design, peaked lapel collar, single-breasted; well fitted through the chest and shoulders and semi-fitted through the waistline to conform to the lines of the figure; lining, if desired, to be in matching color; to be closed with four large regulation coat buttons equally spaced; four-gore back with center seam.

(b) Collar and lapel. The collar to measure approximately 134 inches in width at the back, the opening between collar and lapel not to exceed 14 inch. Lapels not more than 12 inch wider than collar end.

(c) Shoulder loops. On each shoulder a loop of same material as the coat, let into the sleeve head seam. placed slightly toward the front, with rounded point of the loop touching lower edge of the collar, buttoning to the coat with a small regulation coat button; loops to be about 1% inches in width at lower end, and tapering to 144 inches in width at point of buttonhole.

(d) Pockets. Two pocket flaps simulating breast pockets placed so that they are horizontal. Center and both ends of pocket flap pointed and buttoned with small regulation coat buttons. Two lower hanging slash pockets set in on the diagonal, double piped with self material a full 48 inch in width without any visible stitching on the outside. (c) Shoulder loops. On each shoulder a loop of same material as the coat, let into the sleeve head seam, placed slightly toward the front, with pointed end of the loop covered by the lower edge of the

collar, buttoning to the coat with a small regulation coat button; loops to be about 176 inches in width at lower end and tapering to 11/2 inches in width at point of buttonhole.

(d) Pockets. Two pocket flaps simulating breast pockets placed so that they are horizontal. Center and both ends of pocket flap pointed and buttoned with small regulation coat buttons. Two lower hanging welt pockets set in on the diagonal with a 1-inch welt of self material. [Paragraphs (c) and (d) amended Aug. 4, 1944, 9 F.R. 10243]

(e) Ornamentation, sleeve. Band of braid 12 inch in width, olive-drab color No. 53, the lower edge 3 inches from end of sleeve. [Par. 11]

$ 709.93 Skirt, WAC. Of adopted design, six-gore skirt, with a 144-inch waistband, and side opening with suitable closure. [Par. 12]

$ 709.94 Overcoat, field-(a) Design. A utility coat, two ply throughout, with a buttoned-in removable wool lining and detachable hood; double-breasted with convertible style roll collar and notch lapel, buttoned down the front with a double row of large regulation overcoat buttons, five on each side, with the top buttons approximately 634 inches apart, and lower buttons approximately 5 inches apart. A rectangular throat piece is provided with two buttonholes for 24ligne buttons. A detachable belt same material as coat with 244 inch tongueless bar buckle and belt keeper held in place by two side loops, and a strap keeper and belt strap. Adjustable tabs to button at cuff, with 30-ligne buttons.

(b) Pockets. Two diagonal hanging pockets cut hand opening in lining and finished with pointed flaps buttoning to the rear.

(c) Shoulder loops. On each shoulder a loop about 6 inches in length, 2%inches in width at the lower end and 134 inches in width at the upper end, which is slightly pointed, same material as the coat, let in at the sleeve seam, buttoning at the upper end with a 30-ligne button.

(d) Hood. Detachable, two ply, of same material as overcoat, with five buttonholes for securing to overcoat. Closed at the face by a drawstring inserted in a tunnel.

(e) Liner. Made from an olive-drab wool fabric with inside yoke, extending down 344 inches below the armhole,

faced with olive-drab rayon fabric, 12 buttonholes for buttoning into overcoat body. (Par. 13)

§ 709.95 Application of War Department directives. The provisions of War Department regulations and directives governing insignia apply to officers and enlisted women of the Women's Army Corps, except where inappropriate and as modified by War Department instruc. tions. PART 711-WOMEN'S ARMY CORPS

CODIFICATION: Prior to the revision of this part, $ 711.3 (c), formerly 796.3 (c), was amended to read as follows by W.D. Cir. 96, Mar. 7, 1944, 9 F.R. 2940.

$ 711.3 Enlisted personnel.

(c) Discharge-(1) Minority. The discharge of any enlisted woman of the Women's Army Corps who is found to be under the age of 20 is mandatory. Discharge will be effected under the provisions of AR 615-360 1 except that the written request of the parent, guardian, or next of kin for the discharge of the enlisted woman will not be required. The parents, guardian, or next of kin of the enlisted woman will be notified of the discharge and the reason therefor.

8 711.2 Mission. The mission of the Women's Army Corps is to further the war effort by releasing male soldiers of the Army of the United States for appropriate military duties, and by making available to the Army the knowledge, skill, and special training of the women of the Nation. [Par. 2]

$ 711.3 Composition and organization-(a) Composition. The Women's Army Corps will consist of the Director of the Women's Army Corps who will be a colonel in the Army of the United States and such commissioned officers of lower grade, warrant officers, and enlisted personnel as are authorized by the Secretary of War, but will not exceed the number authorized from time to time by the President.

(b) Organization. The Corps will be organized into the Office of the Director; such training centers, schools, and other installations as may be required; and such units, detachments, and individuals as may be assigned for duty with the various continental and oversea commands. [Par. 3)

$ 711.4 Applicable regulations. The provisions of Army Regulations, War Department circulars, and other instructions apply to members of the Women's Army Corps, its officers, warrant officers, and enlisted women, except where inappropriate, as modified herein, or by appropriate War Department directives. Whenever the terms “officer," "warrant officer," and "enlisted man" are used in existing regulations, they will be construed to include officers, warrant officers, and enlisted women of the Women's Army Corps. (Par. 6)

$ 711.5 Eligibility for enlistment and reenlistment-(a) General. Any female citizen of the United States who is of excellent character, who meets the required mental and physical requirements, and who is eligible under the conditions below, may be enlisted or reenlisted in the Army of the United States within authorized quotas.

(b) Age. An applicant must have attained her 20th but not her 50th birthday.

(1) Completion of enlistment prior to 50th birthday. No applicant will be given the oath of enlistment who has attained her 50th birthday, regardless of date of application for enlistment.

$ 711.1 Status and statutory authority. The Women's Army Corps is a component of the Army of the United States, under authority of act of July 1, 1943 (57 Stat. 371; 50 U.S.C. App., Sup., 15511555) [Par. 1]

1 Administrative regulations of the War Department pertaining to discharge of enlisted men.

(2) Proof of date and place of birth. Satisfactory proof of date and place of birth should be established by one of the following: Birth certificate or photostatic copy thereof, bonafide school, institutional, or baptismal or other church records, showing birth date of applicant; affidavit of physician or midwife attending birth of applicant; affidavit of parent or parents; affidavit of relative or responsible party in those cases where no reasonable doubt of age or place of

birth exists.

(c) Citizenship. An applicant must be a citizen of the United States.

(1) Proof of date and place of birth as required in paragraph (b) (2) of this section will be considered proof of citizenship in the case of native born citizens.

(2) In cases of naturalized citizens, final naturalization papers must be presented.

(3) In those instances where an applicant became naturalized while a minor through the naturalization of parent or parents, a certificate of derivative cit

izenship or parents' final papers will be considered proof of citizenship.

(4) In the absence of original papers for presentation as evidence of naturalization, the applicant may obtain official documentary proof by writing the Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and paying the required fee.

(d) Education. The minimum educational qualifications will be at least 2 years of high school equivalent schooling, such as business, vocational, or trade school.

(e) Physical standards. (1) Physical standards are as prescribed in AR 40– 100' with the following exceptions:

(1) Dental requirements for enlistment in the Women's Army Corps.

(ii) In addition to the causes for rejection listed in AR 40-100, a venereal disease will be disqualifying for enlistment.

(iii) The weight requirements for women less than 62 inches in height are as follows:

(2) Limited military service for officers of the Women's Army Corp is authorized as specified for female components of the Medical Department in Army Regulations.

(3) Deviations from normal physical standards that will not interfere with nor prevent the full and satisfactory performance of the duty for which the individual is being enlisted, appointed, or is being ordered to active duty, and that are not of a nature likely to be aggravated to a disabling degree by the type of military service contemplated to be performed, may be waived, in the manner and under the conditions authorized, by commanding generals of service commands as prescribed in current War Department regulations. (Par. 10)

(f) Dependents-(1) Children. (1) A woman with a child or children under 14 years of age may be enlisted only under the following conditions:

If she has become legally, or in fact, divested of the care, custody, control, and support of such child or children at least 18 months prior to date of her application, established by the submission of proper proof as follows:

(a) If by court action, a certified copy of court order or other court action.

(b) If not by court action, but in fact, by the affidavits of the prospective recruit and the person or persons exer
