Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Pet. i. 2.

The God of all grace, who hath called us to his eternal glory, by Chrift Jefus, make you perfect, eftab. lifh, ftrengthen you. I Pet. v. 10, II. Now, the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jefus Chrift, the great Shep herd of the theep, through the blood of the everlafting covenant, make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleafing in his fight, through Jefus Chrift. Amen. Heb. xiii. 20, 21.

I pray that your love may abound ftill more and more, in knowledge, and in all judgment, that ye may ap prove things that are excellent, that ye may be fincere, and without offence, till the day of Chrift, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jefus Chrift, to the praife, and glory of God. Phil. i.

10, 11.

The Lord give you understanding in all things. 2 Tim. ii. 7.

Now, the Lord dire& your hearts to the love of God, and the patient waiting for of Chrift. 2 Theff. iii. 5.

Now our Lord Jefus Chrift himfelf, and God even our Father, who bath loved us, and given us everlasting confolation and good hope, through grace, comfort your hearts, and effablish you in every good word and work. 2 Theff. ii. 16, 17.

The Lord make you to encrease and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men--to the end he may establish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God even our Father, at the coming of the Lord Jefus Chrift with all his faints. 1 Theff. iii. 12, 13.

Other paffages of fcripture, alfo, containing devout wishes or inftructions, may be changed into benedictions, in the following manner.

May the peace of Chrift be given you may his peace, which has nothing of the fpirit of this world in it, remain with you for ever; and let not your hearts be troubled, neither be ye afraid. John xiv. 27.

Brethren may you be perfect, may you be of good comfort, may you be of one mind, may you live

in peace; and may the God of love and peace be with you. 2 Cor. xiii.

11.

Now, may the God of our Lord Jefus Chrift, the Father of glory, give unto you the fpirit of wisdom and revelation, in the knowledge of him ; and may the eyes of your underftanding be enlightened, that we may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the faints. Eph. i. 17, 18.

Brethren, may ye be blamelefs, and harmlefs, the fons of God without rebuke, and, in the midft of a crooked, and perverfe generation, may ye thine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life, that we may rejoice together in the day of Chrift. Phil. ii. 15, 16.

May the peace of God, which paffeth all underftanding, keep your hearts and minds, through Jefus Chrift. Eph. iv. 7.

May the God of peace be with you. Eph. iv. 9.

May ye be filled with the knowledge of the divine will, in all wisdom, and spiritual underftanding, that ye may walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleafing, being fruitful in every good work, and encreafing in the knowledge of God; frengthened with all night according to his glorious powe, unto all patience and long fuffering with joyfulness; and may ye give thanks unto the Father, who hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the faints in light, Col. i. 9, 12.

Now, brethren, may your hearts be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full affurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, even the Father, and of Chrift, in whom are hid all the treasures of wifdem and knowledge. Col. ii.2, 3.

Now, may the peace of God rule in your hearts; may you be thankful; may the word of Chrift dwell in you richly in all wildom; and what ever ye do in word, and deed, may ye do all in the name of the Lord Jefus, giving thanks to God even the Father by him. Col. iii. 15, 16, 17.

May our God count you worthy of his heavenly calling, and fulfil all the

the good pleasure of his goodnels, and the work of faith with power; that the name of our Lord Jefus Chrift may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God, and our Lord Jefus Chrift. 2 Theff. i. 11, 12.

May the grace of our Lord be exceeding abundant toward you, with faith and love, which are in Chrift Jefus, 1 Tim.i. 14.

May you keep the commandments of God without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jefus Chrift. Tim. vi. 14.

May ye all, brethren, obtain the falvation, which is in Chrift Jefus, with eternal glory. 2 Tim. ii. 10

Now, may the Lord deliver you from every evil work, and preserve you unto his heavenly kingdom. 2 Tim. iv. 18.

May the grace of God be always with you, which teacheth us, that denying all ungodliness, and worldly lufts, we should live foberly, righteously, and godly in this prefent world, looking for the bieffed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jefus Chrift. Tit. i. 11, 12, 13.

May you all be of one mind, having compaffion one of another..may you love as brethren, and be pitiful and courteous, not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contranwife, bleifing, knowing that ye are called to this, that ye should inherit a blefling. 1 Pet. ii. 8, 9.

When the chief Shepherd fall appear, may ye receive a crown of glory, that fadeth not away. 1 Pet.

V. 4.

Now, brethren, may you give all diligence, to add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to tem. perance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godlinefs brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity that these things being in you, and abounding, they may make you to be neither barren, nor uniruitful, in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jefus Chrift. 2 Pet. i. 5, 8.

Now, brethren, may you give all diligence to make your calling and election fure; that thus, an entrance

The NEW TESTAMENT DOXOLOGIES.

To Him, of whom, and through whom, and to whom are all things; to Him be glory, for ever. Amen, Rom. xi. 35.

Now, to Him, who is of power to eftablish you according to the gospel. and the preaching of Jefus Chrifi,cording to the revelation of the myitery, which was kept fecret fince the world began, but now is made manifeft, and by the fcriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlafting God, made known to all nations, for the obedience of faith. Bieffed be the God and Father of our Lord Jefus Chrift, who, accord, ing to his abundant mercy, hath be gotten us again to a lively hope, by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptable, undefited, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for all thofe, who are kept by the power of God, through faith unto falvation. 1 Pet.i. 3, 5.

Now unto Him, who is able to keep us from falling, and to prefent us faultless before the prefence of his glory, with exceeding joy, to the onLy, wife God our Saviour, be glory, and majefty, dominion and power, both now, and ever. Amen. Jude xxiv. 25.

Unto him, who loved us, and wash ed us from our fins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priefts unto God and his Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Rev. i. 5, 6.

Glory, and honour, and thanks, to him who fitteth on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever. Rev. iv. 9.

Before I proceed, I fhall make fome remarks on the preceding Doxologies.

In the first place, it is worthy of particular notice, that there is no inflance whatever in the facred writ•, ings of any ascriptions of praise to the Holy Spirit. Whatever men may think, who admit that the neuter gender is properly tranflated HE, the apoftles had more wifdom than to perfonify the miraculous powers which they poffeffed, or to afcribei glory and honour to those powers. Men only who copy from the Weftminfter confeffion, what the com-1 pilers of that confeffion copied from the mafs-book, can fall into fuch idolatrous abfurdities.

Secondly, The doxologies, that are offered to Jefus Chrift, are only five, and these are taken from two of the doubtful books of the new Teftament, that is, from two of those books which were rejected by fome of the primitive chriffians, and which, therefore, are never confidered as equally authoritative with the other books, upon any matter of faith. But, asbelieve both the fecond Epiftle of Peter, and the book of Revelations to be genuine, I can readily adopt all their doxologies, afing them, in the fenfe in which they ufed them, using them in a perfect confiftency with the grand leading doctrine of the wholefcriptures, giving glory to Jefus, Chrift to the glory of God, or giving glory to Jefus Chrift, as Jefus Chrift, or as the appointed Saviour, or afcribing to him, under the one Lord, who fitteth on the throne from everlafting, all dominion in the church for ever. But, as all the apostles always knew and declared that Jefus Chrift, received all his glory and do. minion from the Father, and that the time is coming when he fhall again deliver up the kingdom to the Father, they never intended to teach us to afcribe to Jefus Chrift the fame glory that we afcribe to the Father, or to confider derivative dominion or the poffeffor of derivative dominion, as upon a level with unchangeable dominion and the unchangeable So

vereign. Such blafphemies were far from them. John, therefore, has taken care, in a thefe doxologies which he has introduced to Jefus Chrift, to point out to us the fupremacy of the Father of all. In Rev. i. 5, 6, he teacheth us, that God is the Father of Chrif. And, in Rev. iv. 9, v. 13, vii. 10, hefufficiently dif tinguishes that glory which is due to the Father, from that which is due to Chrift, by fuper-eminently chara&terifing the Father, as "Him, who fitteth upon the throne."

I fhall now conclude, with obferving, that the following Doxologies, may also be used, upon the authority of the Scriptures, by making that alteration in the fcripture language, which fuch forms neceffarily require. : Unceafing thanksgiving be afcribed to God, through Jefus Chrift, our Lord. Rom. vii. 25.

To God, even our Father,be everIming praifes, in the name of our Lord Jefus Chrift. Eph. v. 20.

May God in all things be glorified, through Jefus Chrift; ami to him be praife and dominion, for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Petiv. 11.

To thee, who art fupremely worthy to thee O Lord, who has created all things, according to thy pleafure,, be glory, and honour, and power. Rev. iv. 11.

All glory be to the God of heaven. Rev. x. 13.

To Thee, O Lord God Almighty, who alone art truly everlafting, be glory from all thy creatures, through all thy boundlefs dominion. Amen. Rev xi. 7.

A NEW TESTAMENT CHRISTIAN.

Now, Meff'rs Editors, you cannot but be fenfible that marriage is very much upon the decline in Bolton, and that, amongft too many of our young men, it is as unfashionable to be married, as it is not to keep a mistress, * What caufe is to be affigned for it, I will not pretend to fay; but this ! dare venture to infift upon, that it is not owing to a want of fufficient difcovery of our young ladies charms; for that, with the magnitude of their hoops, and the difufe of their handkerchiefs, they difcover as much as men can in confcience defire, unless they would have them fhow all they have. I might here fay a great deal in praife of the prefent fashionable hoops, and of their great ufe in difcovering the limbs: An inftance I lately faw in the Mall, where two young ladies, walking together arm in arm in close converfation, with their hoops preffing hard on one fide againft each other, the other fides at the fame time flew up very high, to the great information of the fpectators, while the poor young ladies, to be fure, knew nothing of the matter. But I must not forget that the defign of my letter is to tell you, that fince marriage is at fo low an ebb, I fhould think you would do great fervice to the publick, if you fet up an office of intelligence for marriage, where young women might be informed where to find young men difpofed to marry, and where young men might meet with the like information about young women. I need not dwell on the usefulness of fuch an office, or fhow how many matches it will, in all probability, fpeedily produce, and how many parties will, by these means, be brought together, who would, perhaps, otherwife have continued ufelefs in their generations. The greatest objections you can have to fuch a scheme will, I prefume, he the great trouble it muftioccafion you; but I hope this will not difcourage you from the undertaking. Try the experiment: If you find bufinefs increafe too fast upon you, you may

erect inferiorces to yours; and I dare fay, the titude of your correfpondents wilt be fuch, that you will have no caur to repent of your care of them Suppole you were to erect, on the North fide of the Market, a large BLEEDING HEART, as the Guardian did his LION, for the reception of your correfpondent's letters would not that be very proper? But I leave the management of the affair to yourselves, you will know better how to tranfact it than I can direct you. I had almost forgot to tell you, that I myfelf want a wife; but when your Heart is erected, I will be more explicit.

The following comes from a Gentleman well known for his Love of Ancient Learning, and researches into Antiquity.

As to the Origin of Mankind, and their different Colours, Sizes, &c. which are propofed to Confideration in your laft Magazine, you may receive, and, if you please, communicate the following Sentiments concerning them. T is received as an undoubted truth, by the wifer and better part of mankind, that all the human race originally defcended from Adam and Eve; he therefore, and the are to be taken as the father and mother of all the living in the world: fo that all the nations of the earth, are to be acknowleged as made of one flesh and blood.

There was a learned man named Le Pagrefe, who wrote a book entitled, Men before Adam, But his proofs of the thing were not fatisfactory to the learned in general. And indeed he himself afterwards printed a retraction of his error.

And there are some nations, who have pretended, that their original was before the time that the earth,

according to the facred account, was created. But their pretenfions are idle and vain. Thus it is as to the pretenfions of the Chinéfe. Even their Fohi, for whom they claim fuch great antiquity, was moft probably Noah: and, from fome documents, that have been produced, it appears moft highly probable, that he was fo.

Some fanciful gentlemen, not. knowing how to account for the dif ferent colours or complexions among mankind, have fancied, that the Almighty Creator originally created three Adams and Eves; one white, the other of the mahogony, and the third of a black complexion.

It does not appear, that the defcen dants from Adam, before the flood, were of different complexions: And, as there is not the leaf appearance, that they were fo; we may reafonably conclude, that there was then no fuch thing exifting.

When all flesh had corrupted their ways, and the earth was filled with violence through them; God then

faw fit to deftroy them all from the earth, except the believing and righte

ous Noah and his family.

As then all the rest of the world were obliterated; a new world was taking place; and all this world has its origin from the family of Noah;' and the people of the various complexions muft hence be derived from

one or other of the fons of Noah.

After the flood, there were fons born to Shem, Japheth and Ham: and as their pofterity were foon great-, ly increased, there was a neceffity for their fair and convenient feparation; and it accordingly took place: and hence, by thefe fons of Noah and their pofterity, the nations after the flood were divided in the earth.

There is not any discovery, that they were cafually or accidently divided. But it looks as if it was by the fpecial direction of Jehovah to Noah, that his pofterity were to settle in fuch and fuch different places; and fo the whole earth was to be overspread and fettled by then. It was in the days of Peleg, that the earth was divided and, as Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood; he therefore lived to
