With me is my Deputy, Cameron Bruemmer, Deputy Director, Office of Public Affairs. Mr. Chairman and members of the subcommittee, I am pleased to appear before you to discuss the fiscal year 1993 request for the Department of Agriculture's Office of Public Affairs. OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS' ACTIVITIES The Office of Public Affairs, indeed the entire Department of Agriculture, is committed to ensuring the productivity, profitability, marketability and stability of America's farmers and ranchers. We play a key role in developing and disseminating information critical to achieving these ambitious goals. Through our relationships with farm communities, the general public, media and government at the Federal, State and local levels, the Office of Public Affairs helps create a public awareness of the nation's agricultural programs and policies. Through a variety of information services, OPA helps the Department eliminate obstacles that otherwise would reduce the efficiency of the farming sector. For example, our teleconferencing ef forts provide easy face to face access to the Secretary by the farmer. Information dissemination efforts are geared to easily and quickly distribute information about USDA recommendations. This (1) |
