Let lids these comets close,

O do not seek to see their shining grace:

For when mine eyes thou seest, they thine will blind,
And thou shalt go, but leave thy heart behind.

THE UPSTART RICH-MAN.

BRED to fetch porter to and fro,

And stun the streets with "

pots below,"

You've found, Punch, God knows how or whence,
The means of cash and consequence.

Now, for stale crums and vapid beer,
You feast on costliest wine and cheer:
Or in rich splendid rooms repose,

Where erst you dar'd not thrust your nose;
And own the street, by lucky hap,
Where stands your early master's tap.
But I, a gentleman, alas!

At schools was doom'd my youth to pass.
-Well may 1 deem my parents sots,-
-O, that I had but carried pots!
Hang pedagogues, and burn all books,
If pot-boys come to rival Dukes.

CHLOE.

PERFECTION IN CHLOE.

BRIGHT as the day, and as the morning fair,

Such Chloe is

and common as the air.

THE BRAINLESS TOPER.

"BROTHER Bucks, your glasses drain."-
Tom, 'tis strong and sparkling red.'
"Never fear-'twont reach my brain:"
'No-that's true-but 'twill your head.'

THE SECOND BRUTUS.

BRUTUS, unmov'd, heard how his Portia fell:
Should Jack's wife die, he would behave as well.

AN IMPORTANT WANT.
BUFO must sure be doubly blest!
What thousands swell his iron chest!
A handsome wife he has at home;
A mistress, should he choose to roam;
His well-stor'd cellar wine contains,
Would almost turn.celestial brains;
And cooks has he, whose talents might:
The veriest epicure delight:

While beaux-esprits and idlers gay
Throng round to charm ennui away!

One want supplied would crown the whole:
What wants he then? he wants a soul.

ON HOMERIDES..

BURNET and Ducket, friends in spite,. Came hissing forth in verse;

Both were so forward, each would write,. So dull, each hung an arse.

Thus Amphisbana, (I have read)

At either end assails;

None knows which leads, or which is led,.

For both heads are but tails.

FROM MARTIAL..

BUT ancient poets thou admirest none,
And only praisest them are dead and gone;
I beg your pardon, good Vacerra, I
Can't on such terms find in my heart to die.

ON LORD DORSET.

BY fav'ring wit, Macenas purchas'd fame,
Virgil's own work immortaliz'd his name:
A double share of fame is Dorset's due,
At once the patron, and the poet too.

BAVIUS.

BY nature Madman, and by study Fool,
Bavius turns Doctor, and destroys by rule;
With heavy face our dubious health presides,
Speaks without judgment, and by guess prescribes;
Aukwardly gay, and stupidly alert!

In every conversation tops his part:

Talks much of travel, books, and state affairs,
And takes a thousand fashionable airs!

He rattles, plays quadrille, sometimes can drink,
Make love en bête-do any thing but think:
Yet to convince this leaden lump can wound,
He weds a fortune of six thousand pound:
And such the influence of Corinthian brass,
As wit unquestion'd all his blunders pass;
For which a poorer or less noisy fool
Would stand the butt of public ridicule!
You'll ask why Bavius meets a different fate?
The secret is-he has a good estate!

A HOME ARGUMENT.

BY one decisive argument

Giles gain'd his lovely Kate's consent
To fix the bridal day.

"Why in such haste, dear Giles, to wed?
I shall not change my mind," she said:
But then,' says he, I may.'

A CASE OF CONSCIENCE;

SUBMITTED TO A LATE DIGNITARY OF THE CHURCH ON HIS NARCOTIC EXPOSITION OF THE FOLLOWING TEXT.

"Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation." BY our Pastor perplext,

How shall we determine?"Watch and pray," says the Text,

"Go to sleep," says the Sermon.

RONDEAU.

LOVE REWARDED.

BY two black eyes my heart was won,

Sure never wretch was more undone!
To Celia with my suit I came,

But she regardless of her prize,
Thought proper to reward my flame
By two black eyes.

TO THE DUKE OF MARLBOROUGH.
BY various means th' immortal Homer seeks
To raise the fame of his heroic Greeks;
For one, from coast to coast confus'dly hurl'd,
To give him room, the bard invents a world;
Whilst one for ever in the trenches lies,
And, where he gain'd so many battles, dies.
In thee the double character unites,
Ulysses wanders, and Achilles fights.

LINES BY A SAILOR,

WHO WAS SENTENCED TO THE CAT-O'NINE-
TAILS, ADDRESSED TO HIS COMMANDER,
WHO HATED CATS.

BY your honour's command,

An example I stand

Of your justice to all the ship's crew:

1 am hamper'd and stripp'd;

And if I am whipp'd,

"Tis no more than I own is my due.

In this scurvy condition,

I humbly petition

To offer some lines to your eye:

Merry Tom by such trash.

Once avoided the lash,

And if fate and you please, so may I.

There is nothing you hate,

I'm inform'd, like a cat;

[ocr errors]

Why!

your honour's aversion is mine:

If puss then with one tail

Can so make your heart fail,

Oh! save me from that which has nine.

ON

DR. CADE'S DYING BY HIS OWN RECIPE
CADE, who had slain ten thousand men,
With that small instrument, a pen,
Being sick, unluckily he try'd

The point upon himself, and dy'd.

ON A LADY WEEPING,

ON HEARING THE FAIR PENITENT READ.

CALISTA'S hapless fate, her guilty flame,
And peace of mind, exchang'd for endless shame,
In deep attention fix'd whilst Myra hears;-
Behold the tender maid dissolv'd in tears!
See, o'er her crimson cheeks, how fast they flow,
Which look like morning roses wet with dew.

Not so th' ill-natur'd prude-with haughty mind
She triumphs in the faults of woman-kind:
Exults with joy to hear of nymphs betray'd;
And blesses heav'n, that she-has never stray'd.
Far other motions felt thy gentle heart,
In the fall'n fair's distress you bear a part,
With sympathetic tears lament her woe,

(Tears which from innocence, and nature flow) And grieve that beauty, bright as thine, should prove A prey to loose desire, and guilty love.

O may this sad example warn the fair,

Of man, false man, with caution to beware

And O mayst thou, thou charming maid, learn hence

To keep thy soul a stranger from offence;

To fly betimes the first approach of ill,
And let thy duty dictate to thy will.
So shalt thou wisely shun the fatal snare,

Nor want that pity which thou shew'st to her.
