Tells again the story of the Boston tea-party. Intended to be accurate in its representation of historic characters and events; to give a true picture of life and thought in Boston before the Revolution, and to bring to the front the young people of the time, to gether with their interesting seniors. Among the latter it introduces John Crane, Paul Revere, Governor Hutchinson, the Quaker owner of the tea-ships, Francis Rotch, and others. It endeavors, also, to do justice to the Royalists.

I have endeavored to set out in these pages as succinctly as possible, and yet (it is hoped) with sufficient fulness for the purpose in view, the conditions which appear favorable for particular processes for the purification of sewage and their necessary limitations." The heroine's favorite metaphor is that "jupon the

ing beauty, wealth, and social position, she cheerfully resigns all these and her cherished aims for the love of a man whose past is shadowed. Touched by her self-sacrifice, her lover is eventually converted to her higher ideals, and in turn shows himself capable of self-obliteration. The last act in their unconventional love story is decidedly the most interesting. The scenes are English.

Captain Arthur Phillip was the first governor of the first Australian colony. Little is known of Phillip's life beyond a half-dozen years of his career-from 1786, when he was chosen to found the settlement of New South Wales, till his return to England in 1792; his despatches and a few contemporary chronicles of that period are the only sources of information, as he indulged scarcely at all in letter writing. The book, therefore, is rather a narrative of the founding of New South Wales than a biography of the colony's first

governor.

The first biography in English of the great French revolutionary leader founded on original documents. Mr. Belloc, late scholar of Balliol College, Oxford, deals only with known facts-facts that may be proved; he has by this method painted a vivid and true picture of Danton, and described the character of the period in which he was a central figure. Benson, E: F. The Capsina: a historical novel; il. by G. P. Jacomb-Hood. N. Y., Harper, 1899. c. 3+333 p. D. cl., $1.50. In a measure a sequel to "The vintage," but can be read independently. The heroine of that book has now become the wife of Mitsos, who has been singled out by Nicholas Vidalis as a worker and leader in the struggles against the Turks, 1819-1822, in the efforts of Greek patriots for independence. The heroine is the head of the historic clan of Capsas, known as the Capsina, a wonderfully strong character. She refused marriage and devoted herself to her father's trade of shipbuilding. She built and fitted out ships to war against the Turk, sailed them herself through dangers from the elements and from brutal enemies, climbed mountains where only goats could go, managed intrigues, etc, etc.. and was all woman in her love for Mitsos. When she knew he was married she vowed vengeance on his wife, but was conquered by his child. Benson, E: F. Mammon & Co. N. Y., Appleton, 1899. c. 4-360 p. D. cl.. $1.50.

The "smart" people of London society again find portrayal through the pen of the author of "Dodo." A slim plot, which shows a struggling group of men and women striving to gain riches at the sacrifice of all honesty and dignity, serves the purpose of introducing many and varied characters that are sketched sharply and cleverly. The English bacarat scandal and the Hooley disclosures suggest some of the incidents. The dialogue is the author's strong point; it is, as usual, brilliantly witty. The scene is London The time the present.
