Educational Dualism in Malaysia: Implications for Theory and PracticeA dual system of education is one in which two mutually-independent systems upholding mutually exclusive and possibly contradictory educational philosophies operate simultaneously. In Muslim countries, the two systems which have been operating are the traditional, religious education and the secular, pragmatic education. After national independence most of the Muslim countries have attempted to reformulate their educational policy and curriculum so as to be contemporary and integrated but remain based on faith. Malaysia is one such predominantly Muslim country that is grappling with this dual system of education. This book highlights attempts made in reformulating the educational policy and curriculum which have been heightened with the presence of a multiethnic and multireligious populace. |
